A couple of tweets from Mark Evans. If you've read his book
"Unholy Union" you'd know what a good understanding he has of
the game. Well, he damn well should do, CEO of Saracens, CEO of
Harlequins, Melbourne Storm, Western Force and now Fijian Drua.

Sad day for Irish.
Sad day for the league.
Sad day for rugby full stop.
I think that ME, who is one of the best thinkers of governance
of the game site be employed forthwith by the RFU and given
carte blanche to reform PRL.
If radical again isn't taken I think that his original vision of
a European "super League" will become reality.

The answer from Mark to Graham Waddell's question is spot-on.
Not that you'll hear it much in the press or media much anytime
soon. And after having a long association with Salarycens,
no-one can accuse him of being biased against them.

I think it's one reason why many players stay in the Southern
hemisphere. If a player can work in the UK and earn enough to
live in a two-bed semi, or work in NZ and live in a four bed
beachfront house... Which would you choose?
(This is an example. No, I haven't researched where players
live. It's based on experiences of people I know who have lived
in SA, AU's, NZ etc).

I like the idea of ME being asked to review and reform the PRL
structure - his tweets over the last few days were very
insightful. His argument is that cycles of pushing the
boundaries of the salary cap among the PRL members (not *just*
Saracens, though they are clearly one of the worst culprits
having been the cause of the last big hike and second marquee
player rule) has led to the unsustainable state that the cap was
meant to prevent.
I don't believe the RFU could impose Evans on the PRL without
invoking the nuclear (and dangerous) option of refusing to
sanction the Prem altogether, because the PRL is an independent
organisation owned by the clubs that sets its own rules. But
Evans - if he wants the job - would probably be acceptable to
the club owners to lead a review and reformation of the
structure. He's been an exec at several of the clubs and is well
respected in the industry. They clearly need to do something,
and they could do a lot worse.

They definitely need to start considering nuclear options.
Trying to patch things up and continue as we are is a ludicrous
approach but that appears to be what the plan is.

Having lived in South Africa, I can say that there is more to
quality of life than the size of the house you live in.
E.g. for me , I like to have a regular supply of electricity.

Be careful what you wish for... the RFU suspending the clubs
from competition was the move that ultimately pushed LI into
receivership. Even suggesting that they could do that to the
Prem would immediately and massively damage the value of the
clubs to their owners (and deter potential future owners from
investing). That's why I called it a nuclear option.
That's not to say the RFU can't say behind closed doors that if
the PRL wants ongoing RFU support then they need to appoint a
credible team to develop a plan for sustainability. And the PRL
ought to be a lot readier to listen to that than before.

Well, if you speak to Kiwis they may tell how great the
lifestyle is (if you like that kind of thing).
But as Never Sleep points out, quality of life is a big
attraction for many people. I stay in touch with old school
friends who have emigrated to NZ, Aus, SA, Canada, US... not one
of them thinks it was a mistake. They return to the UK and can't
believe how it's changed, and how much better many things are
where they live.
But it's a personal choice. All of those places have their
issues, and it's just a case of what kind of life you want for
you and your family.
