Naw, a good faith discussion makes a refreshing change and it's
nice to have posters from other clubs. Even Saracens. Toga is a
very special case and even I can't bring myself to tar all
Saracens fans with the same brush.

Thank you, I do try and be objective. I've followed Saracens for
25 years and for the record was heartbroken when the depth of
the fraud was revealed. Its been a tough few years, and still
the accusations fly around which is I'm sure deserved. Every
club has fans we would rather not admit to, much like any family
and in interests me greatly to tap into the views of other
clubs.
I hope as the summer rolls on and the so called leaders of or
game re shape what's left of it.. I hope we have something to
discuss post WC.
As for the model... save that for another day..

Next season is going to be very silly. The format is bonkers,
the fallout from the world cup campaign will be epic, there'll
be loads of clubs missing... I thought the Covid season was
going to be the oddest, but this season and next will probably
end up being the weirdest the pro game has seen in this country.

No-one answered this!
Essentially the only fair way to measure value is to ask if
you're measuring the value to the club's success, or the value
that an agent would put on a new contract - because they're not
always aligned. In the case of the players you mentioned:
Tompkins - was a very good understudy in the days where Barritt
and co ran the roost in midfield, who slotted in seamlessly
after that and has won loads. Would've been valued as a key
member of the squad by Saracens and on a decent wage (nowhere
near Farrell et al, but next tier) but his commercial value
would've risen twice - once when he became undisputed first
choice, and again once he got selected by Wales. His Wales
selection doesn't make him a better Saracens player, but it does
provide a bargaining chip. I think he's an excellent example of
someone who reaches his peak at Saracens, as his somewhat
inconsistent international displays show, and the undeniably
excellent coaching has a lot to do with that.
McFarland - just a fantastic bit of scouting work and foresight
to sign him. Anyone who did see him apparently thought he was
destined for great things and he did get capped before he
joined, but there's not a club in the land who wouldn't have
considered him a gamble. Given how he hit the ground running I'm
not sure the coaching can take credit for his ridiculous
athletic talents. Despite his international status he would not
have been expensive and I don't think there was any sort of
bidding war for him either. Now, if he stays fit and becomes an
ever-present in that side, his ceiling is such that his
commercial value would skyrocket despite his T2 international
status, because some players are just that good (e.g. Radradra).
Hunter-Hill - yep, fair enough. Has he been injured? The Judas
seems to have overtaken him quite easily. Sometimes players like
this benefit from being part of a successful side when it comes
to picking up caps - the question is whether it sticks. We've
had a few like this over the years who've picked up caps for
Scotland or Wales (Kohn, Lang, etc) without really being of the
required standard. It all helps them when they're negotiating
contracts but I would expect Saracens would have him as
middle-tier at best.
Segun - yeah, it was a surprise he didn't do much. In all
honesty I don't know what sort of future he has at Saracens,
whether he's ever going to be a genuine first XV choice. He has
always looked promising (as has Dom Morris) but he's 26/27 now
and should be in his prime. Certainly the ability of the
Saracens coaches to get the most out of the guys below the
outright starters is unmatched in the league, and unlike a lot
of the other players, Segun is not an international or a hugely
experienced club pro. I think in his case, Saracens probably
value him as a player higher than non-Saracens fans do, but I
also I think his agent would have to work very hard indeed to
get him on a decent wage considering what's around him!
Dan obviously has come from nowhere to leapfrog an international
and a seriously experienced club pro (who had a pretty good
season recently!). Players like that are their own thing, really
- like Jamie George before him, or Marcus Smith or Robshaw or
Earl or Curry or Marler or Watson or whoever - as soon as they
get a chance as a young player, it's obvious they've Got It and
are immediately not just good enough to start, but good enough
to be considered a likely star. He's a great find, and it's
great news for England given the relative paucity of options in
that shirt. Quins have a collection of talented young hookers
but none of them have made the shirt their own and the solid
experience pro and big lad Walker is the preferred option for a
reason. If Riley (for example) becomes 2/3rds the player Dan
will probably be in a season or two we'd be very happy.
