I'm pleased for him, but if it wasn't Ashton, retiring, the card
wouldn't have been downgraded.
As I said above, yellow would have been reasonable in the first
place but I simply don't believe the same decision would have
been reached after a game in round 1

I think they would probably overturn wherever the guy being
tackled basically told them it wasn't a red.
Now whether cadan would have done that for a guy who wasn't
retiring in a game which had no bearing on quins is another
question...

Murley's got this wrong - though it's hard to see how he could
condemn a fellow professional in public. So an unrepentant
show-boating eye-gouger gets another chance. His biggest regret
on retiring was that he'd been banned for a year in total
through his career, not that he brought the game into disrespect
and discouraged youngsters from ever playing the game. And, in
reinstating him, the panel have also stuck a sharp spear into
the confidence of referees.

Every now and then you get a player who does the "honourable"
thing in order to prevent another player getting a ban that
would have huge repercussions for them.
By the standards of the modern game it was a stone cold red
card, though. Starts high, hits up, decent amount of force (not
a soak) and the side on replay shows pretty clearly that it's a
clean shoulder to the head that snaps Murley's head back.

stick this at 0.25 playback speed at 3:36 in the video and
you'll see. Yes, Ashton's arm hits Murley's arm juuuust before
his shoulder hits him in the face. That is no kind of mitigation
and frankly it's absurd the lengths the commissions will go to
to exonerate players for dangerous tackling.
The officials and the off-field decisions are sowing chaos.

?? Missing out on the playoffs when you're retiring would have
been huge, that's why so many people were feeling so bad for him

I feel sorry for the refs. They must be as confused as everyone
else about what is a red card these days. They get told to clamp
down on high tackles and warned they won’t be picked for the
World Cup if they don’t and then their decisions are undermined.
I hope it gets sorted before the WC.
What’s the good of winning an appeal if you have been knocked
out?

Yes - they have been knocked out of the Heineken Cup.
But - they are still in the Premiership and they play on Sunday

It is all a bit confusing bordering farcical.
Maybe it will just get to the stage where the ref will stop play
for a dangerous tackle, and then the audience at home or a
randomly selected panel at the game made up of registered
supporters of other teams can vote, to see what they think it
will be in terms of no action, yellow or red, (a bit like ask
the audience). Also, the head coach of each side can have 3
reviews if the ref choses not to stop play to look at a
decision. Maybe we can get some extra sponsor money into the
game as well, calling it the Wetherspoons Jury decision
I personally think a celeb panel would generate more interest
into the game.
"And now we go over to Ross Kemp, Gemma Collins, and Ozzy
Osbourne to see if Owen Farrell will have any repercussions...

I think Seequin was referring to the forthcoming RWC and how
much of a mess it could be.
