Was a poor tackle with no massive mitigation if you take into
account similar red cards, which haven't been quashed at appeal,
so anything less than a ban (3-6 weeks), will be the RFU doing a
favor for someone so he gets a nice send off, which would be set
the precedent for future cards/subsequent appeals.

I can understand why they are appealing it as they really have
nothing to lose.
Worst case scenario is that they increase the ban - but, this
makes no difference as Ashton is retiring anyway.
Best case scenario is that they downgrade the red card to a
yellow and then he is free to play.
However, I re-watched the incident a few minutes ago.
It looks a clear shoulder to the head - so, I'm not sure that
they will downgrade it.
The only possible mitigation is that they see it as a passive
tackle as Ashton was coming in from an angle rather than from
directly in front.
But, who knows. If he wears a suit, has a letter from his
primary school PE teacher and doesn't eat the chocolate biscuits
- then he could be in with a chance of a downgrade.

Has Ashton already had a ban reduced for attending a "learn how
to tackle properly" course? I seem to remember he has.

As well as a course on opthamology, chewing his food properly
and manual handling, with emphasis on safe lifting and putting
down!

I think a yellow would have been reasonable but I don't think
the decision was obviously wrong enough to overturn

Think this was the right result. Selfishly happy to see Tigers
down to 14 on Sat but yellow would have been fairer. Credit to
Caden for speaking in support.
