Trying to look at Sarries' situation objectively based purely on
the information from that site, they have lost Malins and
       replaced him with Parton.
As well-regarded as Parton is, I'd guess he will be cheaper than
Malins given the latter is a multi-capped test player. That
should mean there is a saving to be spent elsewhere. That saving
plus the loss of Ellis may come close to paying for Willis - two
similarly-aged back rows, neither of whom is capped.
That leaves two loan returnees and West replacing Hislop.

Yes, Malins would be a lot more expensive than Parton.
Willis vs Ellis? They're not similarly aged - Willis is 24,
Ellis is 28 - and there's a big gulf in quality, given Willis is
consistently one of the best 8s in the league and likely to take
over from Billy V at Saracens very quickly. And, more
pertinently, Ellis signed on a 6 week loan deal.

Exeter at least have a strong crop of youngsters to promote,
it's largely those guys who've made an impact in the last few
months. Some canny signings of young Welsh talent mean they're
looking quite well set up to develop over the coming years.
They're losing a lot of big names but Hogg's replacements are
looking superb, Nowell is slower than me now, Jack Maunder is
worse than his brother, Harry Williams is an absolute liability,
etc. It's the end of an era but doesn't look to me like
impending doom and if I were an Exeter fan I'd be pretty happy
with taking a long term view on getting these wages off the
books while promoting obvious talent from within.
Bristol on the other hand are losing their backbone and large
chunks of their star power. Losing Piutau, Radradra, Morahan was
always on the cards given their somewhat mercenary nature, but
to also lose Purdy, Bedlow, Uren, Joyce, Stooke, Lloyd etc while
loudly complaining that their academy isn't as good as the other
clubs for unfair reasons suggests a very tough time ahead.

Agree JG. The flip side of the Exeter coin is that lots of big
earners moving off the books at one time gives them scope for a
complete rebuild. It will be interesting if Baxter uses this
opportunity to evolve the playing style.
Hopefully the relative stability of our squad pays dividends
next season. On paper, pretty happy with the recruitment and
retention decisions given the circumstances. I think we've
       managed it better than most.

Apologies - somehow I read those ages as 24 and 25 in the
       original post.
Even so, for me there isn't the smoking gun against Sarries that
some seem to think. I'd believe that the difference in salary
between Malins and Parton is greater than that between Willis
and Ellis. Or at the very least close enough that the difference
can be made up in new deals for other players.

Mate, I'm pretty sure the difference between Willis and Ellis is
huge. Unlike Ellis, Willis isn't signing on a short term loan
deal. I think you might have missed that bit.

It's not the players on the moving list that's remarkable about
Sarries... it's the players who are staying.

Not really missed that Ellis was on a short deal

Have Sarries announced any retiring players yet? If the likes of
Goode, Maitland, Wray call it quits that might balance the
       books.
And lots of talk of Billy heading off after the WC.

Just confirmed that Jackson Wray is retiring at the end of the
       season.
