Silence from Clubs and Premiership Rugby

I have been following Quins since the dark ages and Prem Rugby
since the start. We have about 100 Premiership Rugby players
about to become unemployed as the clubs go down to £5 million
budget each and we still have total silence! Quite
extraordinary! Over 100 redundant what are they going to do wait
for the whistle? How many are English qualified?
I have paid my dues for 23/24 to Quins and I have no idea as of
today how many Clubs there are going to be! 10 or 11? I think I
must be a complete mug to accept being treated like this.
Nothing from Quins or PR how long do they think we will accept
this? At least give us the outline of what you are trying to
achieve.

What do you want the clubs to do about it? They've got a salary
cap - which was agreed 3 years ago - and most clubs will have
been planning towards that.
The collapse of Wasps and Worcester has thrown a bit of a
spanner into the works because it means that there are suddenly
a much larger pool of players from academy to international who
were potentially available - but there was no increase in the
salary cap to accommodate that.
If you look at what's happened with Quins, three relatively
expensive players have left for overseas deals, a few older
players have retired and some squad players have been released.
I think overall we're something like 12 out, 3 in and 8
promotees from the academy, so broadly in line with the expected
exodus. But it's also a fairly typical level of turnover for
Quins.
Other clubs - like Exeter - have made some more sweeping changes
in terms of high profile players going. I suspect Quins have
handled this better than most as they re-signed several key
players early in COVID, I suspect on deals that allowed them to
stay within the cap while offering more later.
I would also hope that behind the scenes clubs have been working
with players who likely weren't going to be renewed to help them
explore other options. Life as a rugby player is short and it's
going to end for everyone sooner or later (except Danny Care),
so clubs are doing more to help with the transition. The

But what would you have the club do? Say it's sorry? Spend over
the cap? Argue publicly for an increase in the cap? Offer
players pay decreases so that we can hoover up Wasps and
Worcester leavers? Raise prices so that they can make a case for
a higher cap after next season?

I wonder, focusing on the 100, whether the powers that be would,
in effect, run a bench scheme so that clubs who lose players to
WC and long term injuries early in the season, get to pick
replacements from within the 100 first, before looking
elsewhere? These could then be outside of the cap bit helping to
keep them paid until things improve....just a thought

I suspect that it is now far fewer than 100.
I think that typically, teams have 40-45 players.
I would guess that there is around a 15% churn at the end of
each season.
So this takes it down to around 70ish.
Then, some of the better players have already been snapped up by
other clubs.
So, the number is probably much less than 70.
Also, Wasps will need players when they re-join the Championship
- This is of course assuming that they re-join as a professional
club. But, we will have no news about this for the next few
months.
So, I don't think that there will be that many spare players.

The figure of 100 came from Robert Kitson in the Guardian this
morning. This is not particularly a hit out at Quins it is
across the board at Rugby Union in England and Premier Rugby in
particular. I feel desperately sorry for the players involved
trying to organise their lives around this chaos and total lack
of information being provided. It’s like a game of Chinese
whispers but appears to be only me that feels this.

I think all of us (except perhaps those who see players as
commodities to be fired if they have a couple of bad games) have
sympathy for the players, but just because we don't know much
about the situation, it doesn't mean the players don't know
more.
Some of them will have some tough decisions about taking a
contract that's less than they'd planned for, and some will have
an even tougher decision about retiring from playing. But that
could happen to any professional sportsperson at any time - it
just happens to have happened to a larger slice of the Prem
playing base than usual. Clubs have been getting better at
helping players to prepare for "what happens next", so I'd
expect most of them to have options to go alongside their broken
dreams.
To BansteadQuin's idea of only picking from that pool of
players, how would that work in practice? There's no guarantee
that any given player will be needed, and how do they pay the
bills while they're waiting to see whether a contract will
emerge? Where does that money come from?

Hopefully someone will post a list soon (they normally do at
about this time of year) - but it would be very interesting to
see what the ins and outs look like across the league. I'd be
particularly interested to see Bath's, I'd love to know how
they're keeping at the new Wuss signings under the cap before
you even think about the addition of Finn Russell.

I would expect that most, if not all, will have secured
alternative employment by the time RWC comes around.

Well, let's hope not since that would appear to be against the
salary cap rules.
