But - didn't we treat the Challenge Cup as a "development
competition" last time that we were in it?
We lost to Ulster at home in the round of 16.

In this context, I would rather send a strong team to Cape Town
and lose to a quality team that field a poor team at the Stoop
and just get blown away as we are using it as an excuse to rest
players.
Also, had we performed 1% better in the pools this year, then we
would have had a home 1/4 final. Surely, this would be a better
event to go to at the Stoop?

Wanting to be in the Challenge Cup is like wanting to be in the
Championship. An admission of being a second class club.
I want to see Quins competing with the best in the best
competitions. I want to see Quins win the Champion's Cup. People
will say that's unrealistic. But I thought that about the
premiership and we've now won it twice. And history shows that
nothing beats Champion's Cup experience in helping to win it.

Sorry disagree we have always got huge pleasure winning the
Challenge Cup and I don’t compare or contrast it in anyway with
the Premiership. Competing against French and Irish teams with
huge budgets and now this ridiculous SA nonsense in the Heineken
is of no interest to me. I enjoy watching Quins compete. Whether
the Madjeski or Sixways for the final the Challenge Cup is fun.

Being a Challenge Cup team makes retaining the likes of Marcus

I prefer the word "recognition". Saracens, a first class club in
terms of results. Sale, the same. Leicester, proved to be a
first class club this season. Northampton, a club much like us.
Came top of the pile this season, but it was really any one of
them, Irish, Exeter and us. But we're bottom of that lot in the
table, so does that make us a first class club? I think not.

Well we currently have more premiership titles than either Sale
or Northampton and as many as Exeter. We have missed out on the
playoffs this season but were the only club to make them in both
the two previous seasons.
But I meant it more as an attitude of where we want to be. Look
at la Rochelle. They spent all but one season between 2002 and
2014 in the second division. They are now European champions.
Look at Exeter.
We have the biggest turnover of any English club. We are one of
the best supported. We have our own ground. We have a terrific
international brand. All the off-pitch elements are there for
success.
As the salary cap edges back up, as I suspect it will, English
clubs could start to be more competitive in Europe again, and
I'd like us to be there.

You have to be in it to win it and we've probably been in it
more than most.

I totally agree with your second paragraph, I want us to do well
and win at the highest level. However if we end up in the
Challenge Cup I don’t see that as an admission of being a second
class club, but an opportunity to play to our strengths and try
and win it. As a supporter it also gives us an opportunity to
travel and see Quins in different places and often in super
rugby heartlands. Or new like Prato or Timisoara. Always look
for the positive.
