Withourt looking to seem too political - yet another prime
example of the crass stupidity of the Govt adopting bizarre and
totally unnecessary "Lockdown" policy and the furlough and
associated tax waste/loan spaffathon that ensued. The fact that
their incessant media messages and associated psycops managed to
convince an entire population that a rather nasty flu bug was
going to wipe the UK population is a different but pertinent and
related topic.
The clubs took the cash on this basis and I guess they'll need
to manage the consequences. The vast majority of self employed /
one man businesses didn't qualify for Rishi's mass quantative
easing stupidity because most were unentitled to this bizarre
furlough concept. Work from home eh?
Anyway - beds have been made to lie in and a couple have already
fallen out never to return. If the RFU want to keep their HQ
cash cow generating their income to finance their glee club they
need to finally invest to keep a marketable Premiership
delivering a sellable sports product and talent development
process. If not, then Twickenham will probably rely more and
more on non-rugby related crowd generated cash such as Rock
Bands or similar.
That's my take. Discussion welcome

Perchance QJ
However - point out where I'm unfair or incorrect in my argument
if you wish. What is wrong or why are you and other reticent to
engage? I think I make mostly fair comment

You don’t actually read what people post, do you? Is that why
you were banned from your club board? Or was it for constantly
whacking on in a political manner?

Bod - 3 times as many UK civilians died of COVID in 3 years than
during 6 years of bombing raids during WW2 (Blitz/V1/V2); its
morbidity rate is roughly the same as that of Spanish Flu (many
more people then died but there were no vaccines available until
late in that epidemic) - hardly a "nasty flu".
I don't think the majority of clubs had a choice about accepting
the money and it will have consequences. The whole rugby edifice
is creaking with concussions and the likely legal battle to
come, wage caps and profitability all major factors that will
have structural effects for the foreseeable future.

"In England and Wales, the total number of excess deaths, due to
all causes, registered between March 2020 and June 2022 was
137,447"
- this clearly excludes Scotland and NI
- it is over and above the "really nice flu" that we get every
year
So - a bit more than a nasty flu.

If clubs fold, it will be because they are losing £3m a year,
and were before covid.
The terms of a government loan will be lost in the noise.

"There seems little argued reason or financial justification to
support the theory that Govt Policy across the Covid event has
been beneficial to English Pro Rugby."
Spot on.
If you accept a political solution that is dependant upon
accepting "free money" short term then subsequently your
position to argue that you're anything other than an ongoing
acquiescent **** is difficult to contest. When the accounts need
reckoning is when the true cost of the previous "instant
gratification"is realised. All types of quantative easing have a
higher repayment cost - twas ever the bankers/lenders deal.
The initial post highlighted an issue that affects the RFU cash
cow with a "conditionally" weighted question about their
traditional source of income derived from English Prem teams and
the players they generate.
Could, would, might?
I'm guessing the HQ crew are working hard to keep their gravey
train flowing but with increasing disinterest in anything below
Prem level.
The majority of the world Rugby Unions generate their core elite
players more successfully from only 4/5 Pro teams, especially
when referenced to the RFU.
That's my take

It's fair to say that the Covid era has affected rugby across
all levels, especially grass roots and of course the travails of
the Top level receive the scrutiny and spotlight. I think the
most focused detriments have been inflicted on the young and
aspiring players at academy and 1st contract level who have seen
their development trajectory stopped/interrupted and then
reengage with clubs who will no give them the professional rugby
pathway they aspired to. This will mightily affect them, and
this may well have accentuated the mental challenges of many
young elite players like Harri in Wales.
