Agreed.
Matson is knowledgable and manages people well, and I can only
base my opinion off what I see..however, I get the vibe that he
may be too nice. I’m not saying I want a headmaster to be feared
type approach, but I get the impression players aren’t having
their feet brought to the fire as much as they should.
Looking back to my younger days, when I’ve had a boss I really
got on with and saw as a mate/even father figure, I probably
didn’t work as hard as I should, because I knew the fallout from
a poor run would be minimal if at all

Danny talks about COS sorting him out as father figure and also
JTH was helped by him. As always horses for courses.

The most impressive sub international coach in world rugby
(Scott Robertson) is a lot more like Matson than Deano...

Does anyone here actually know what Matson is like behind the
scenes, away from the TV cameras? Or is it assumed that he
doesn't simply adopt a nice persona for interviews?

He’s taken a couple of sessions with the Ams and has been
exactly as you’d expect from his TV appearances. However, again
that could be his public persona and with paid professionals he
may be different. Plus, he gets us for a one-off session so he
may be different after an unexpected loss.

Eddie Jones took a session with my old club. By all accounts he
was a lovely chap and really helped them massively. I doubt he
was so fun and friendly with the England team though.

I used to work for our west country rivals back when TM was
coaching there and have seen him taking sessions - he's well
capable of getting straight to the point when he needs to.

He was at Surrey Sports park on Wednesday coaching the seniors
at the same time as the DPP were playing matches.
It all looked very relaxed, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it
to look any different with such relatively uncontrolled public
access. He spent a fair while watching the boys play whilst
chatting to their coaches after the seniors had finished, which
was nice.

I’d’ve thought Jones probably was all sweetness and light with
the England team. At times.
And when necessary he could be less friendly.
Much the same as Tabs

There will of course be a different approach to professionals
than amateurs. One lot are paying to play for fun and the others
work for you being paid to do what you tell them.
