Central Contracts

McCall is now calling for these to be implemented in England,
quoting how succesful they have been for Ireland.
Call me cynical but I assume this would give the Clubs more
central funds to expand or improve their squads?

Yes, the burden of paying those England players will fall to the
RFU rather than the club.
Given players get c.£25k per match for being in the starting XV
which amounts to £300k - based on the usual 12 games per year,
(5 Six Nations games, 3 Summer tour games & 4 Autumn
Internationals), a considerable contract for most Premiership
clubs.

If the players on central contracts are removed from the salary
cap, allowing the clubs to develop greater strength in depth so
the internationals are less missed when they're away on England
duty and any given club's season is less likely to be screwed by
the foibles of whom Borthwick and team choose to select or not,
then I think it would be a great development.
The RFU would have to figure out a fair system to ensure that
centrally contracted players didn't become an unfair boost for a
limited number of clubs though.

Not sure they would make that much difference from an England
perspective - those EPS players get decent rest periods and then
you've got the issue of how many central contracts there will be
and who gets them (plus the problem when player(s) have a
massive dip in form and don't warrant their place).
The bigger factor behind Ireland's success is essentially
picking the bulk of your team from one province, thereby meaning
any Leinster game doubles as an Ireland development game. Copy
& Paste game plan and tactics and you have a more condensed
version of what New Zealand have had for years with their super
rugby teams.

Or maybe they'd end up paying their non-centrally contracted
players more? The ability and willingness of anyone in rugby to
pass up on selfish short-term gain for the long-term health of
the sport is in very short supply.

If it meant clubs had more funds to spend on other wages, then I
think its a positive step. However, as alluded to, Irelands
success comes down to the bulk of the team playing together on a
regular basis. How could could England be if we only had 4
sides, (with maybe the bulk of the side coming from one team).

Ireland & New Zealand benefit also from having far more control
of the Province/Franchise recruitment by limiting the number of
players who are not eligible for the national side that can be
recruited, particularly where they might affect the development
of local players.

Another approach would be:
Reduce the Premiership salary cap significantly. This will help
Prem clubs to make a profit.
Allow two Prem clubs to make a cash bid for the ability to be
"Salary Cap" exempt. The money from this bid would be
distributed to all of the remaining Prem clubs to help their
finances.
These two "super" teams can then recruit who they want and can
pay those players whatever they want to. There would be no limit
at all.
This makes it easier for England team selection as the bulk of
the team will come from 2 super-clubs. The England team will
probably get better results. Also, these 2 super-clubs can
recruit more players to backfill the holes that are left during
international games.
These 2 clubs should be good enough to seriously compete in the
European cups.
Having 2 amazing teams would probably drive more interest into
the club game. Certainly, the home and away fixtures between
these 2 teams would be a big earner for TV rights. So, this
would increase TV money and this would benefit all of the other
clubs.
It would make it much harder for the other Prem teams to win the
Premiership. But, all that a Prem team needs to do is to come
3rd or 4th in the league and then win 2 games - not impossible.
Also, could you imagine being at the Stoop for a home game and
actually beating one of these 2 teams. It would be a great
event.
(Assuming that there are 12 clubs. Then Quins would have 9 games
against "even" teams and 2 games where we are a massive
underdog.)

Why are you assuming that we aren’t one of the Super teams. We
have the best supported club in the south. We have a huge
stadium right next to us. Leicester could be the Northern one.

Ideally we would need a multi millionaire/billionaire backer who
was really wanting to just throw money at the club without a
view of it making a profit.
I was thinking of Bruce Craig, Lansdown, Wray. maybe even
Yareet's chap - Orange
Get them into a bidding war every few years. That would probably
generate some cash.
