As alluded to above, a key thing to consider when comparing
Smith and Farrell is what sort of player they have at 9 and 12.
Wilkinson often had Catt at 10. I've often heard it said that
Catt would call the play and Wilkinson was superb at executing
it. If Farrell is at 10, is Lawrence / Manu / Slade calling the
plays well, or is Farrell doing it? I have no doubt Farrell can
execute whichever skill he needs to excellently. At Sarries, he
might have Goode or someone else helping to call the plays,
leaving him to focus on execution and other matters, such as
defence.
Marcus has Danny inside him at Quins managing the game to a
certain extent. I'm not sure Andre would be calling the plays,
but he has that help from Danny instead. With the current
England set up, I'm not sure any of the 9s are managing the game
that much - they're just doing their basic job (pass slowly from
the ruck, kick the ball away!). If he then has no-one at 12
helping with that aspect either, then he's having to call the
plays, execute them and do the other bits of his job.
So as well as the 10's performance hinging a lot on how the pack
does, they are also reliant on a 9, 12 or 13 chipping in.

Greenwood certainly called a lot of the plays whether standing
at 12 or 13 (always wearing 13, of course). Catt was more used
to take the pressure of Wilkinson when they were up against a
team with fast flankers who could rush the 10.
It strikes me that England asked both its flyhalves to do things
that they don't do regularly for their clubs. Marcus is being
asked to manage the game, which Danny normally does. But
equally, Owen was being asked to do attacking kicks - crossfield
kicks and grubbers - which aren't a big part of Saracens'
repertoire.

Faz also has Goode at 15 for Sarries who's arguably a better
natural 10 than he is, certainly more creative.

Maybe invite him to a Quinssa evening with Mark Evans (currently
in Fiji but with Welsh roots) and either Laurie or Adam Jones so
we can really find out what the real problem is?

There are certain things I don't understand about SB's game-plan
though.
Faz has a kicking success somewhere around 70%.
Which means that if you wanted to win a game by kicking, then
your pack needed to win 14 kickable penalties to score 30 points
to win the game.
Winning 14 kickable penalties in a game is a lot (and not really
something you can expect to get against a tier 1 team).
So, the game plan appears to be invalid.

Who said they wanted to win the game by kicking penalties? Have
I missed that somewhere?
If that was the plan, it seems strange to bring in Nev.

Basically, we had forward domination at the start of the game.
But, every penalty was kicked towards the goal.
Typically teams such as Quins would have chosen to go for the
corner.
I can only assume that the plan was'to keep the scoreboard
ticking over'.

Farrell's kicking rate during this 6 Nations was 44% before the
Ireland game (including a risible 33% v Wales), which may go to
explain Farrell going for 2 pens in front of the posts rather
than for the corner. He still ended up bottom of the 6N kickers
pile on 55%. Expecting to beat Ireland with such a limited
strategy was bizarre.

Jones has been in tight with the Sarries guys for years now.
He's been an absolute moron for longer, and it's not like he had
any credibility to destroy by being like this.

in defence (lol), 1 turnover conceded, 2 handling errors
Bundee Aki - 15 carries, 77m made, 4 tacklers beaten, 7/0 in
defence, 1 try assist
Manu Tuilagi - 9 carries, 46m made, 1 tackler beaten, 9/2 in
defence, 1 turnover conceded, 1 handling error
Robbie Henshaw - 6 carries, 44m made, 2 tacklers beaten, 2 clean
breaks, 8/0 in defence, 1 try scored
Henry Slade - 11 carries, 43m made, 1 tackler beaten, 6/1 in
defence
That's not close. The Irish 3 defended much better, attacked
much better, and got the rewards. And that's with a rusty Robbie
Henshaw, minus Ringrose, and with the game but limited Aki who
still outplayed Manu who offered very little threat.
(Interesting to note how high the carrying stats are on the 6N
page compared to ESPN - who have Manu at 12m, Slade at 11m,
which tallies much closer with my memory of the game - wonder
what the methodology difference is)

"Trying" to ease people through the gaps. Or as we might call it
- passing to someone who gets tackled. Remarkable. Anyway, Owen
Farrell The Superb Marshal Of The Defence missed SIX TACKLES
against Ireland.

Does someone want to explain to him that we lost handily and
there was absolutely no inspiration on display? Farrell is also
not a good on-field captain.
We all know how much of a fool Jones made of himself as soon as
Saracens' cheating came to light. He's essentially their pet
journo. But I'd like to thank Jones for showing just how much of
the full throated defence of Farrell comes from people who are
genuinely clueless about the sport, no matter how much time
they've spent covering it. Farrell's history at 10 for England
is sketchy, with just as many agonisingly laboured and negative
displays as actually decent ones. And England's winning record
with him at 10 is not great either. The blanket assumption that
because he's a superb 10 for Saracens, he must be a world class
fly half does seem to be bandied about without him ever having
to produce world class displays for England.
