I don’t understand why Borthwick has picked Smith and Walker if
he doesn’t trust them. If you’re down to 14 men for 40 minutes
then surely you empty the bench?

No point in playing Smith at all with that game plan, he was
well out of it, at least there won't be any blame heading his
way.

Ireland were terrible, and were there to be put away.
England, although they actually turned up, could not do it.
Farrell had packed his kicking boots, and kicked three long
distance penalties to keep England involved.
But JvP and Owen do not create try scoring opportunities, so
your back three are only there to field kicks.
And when Ireland stopped dropping the ball, they ran through the
England "defence" - albeit by then depleted.
By the letter of the law, it was a clear red cad.
If you do not want to be red carded, you must have your hips
bent and your arms up all the time.
If he had been in position to wrap, it might not have even been
a penalty.
But the right team won.
In other news, Italy turned up and gave the Scots a fright,
Tommy had a good game. A last gasp try put a gloss on the Scots
performance.- 4-1 would have been a fairer result.
Wales were blown away by France. If the All Blacks are not on
the top of their game, France could beat Ireland in Paris final
- the draw is looking horribly lopsided. I fear we could see 50
point drubbings in each semi-final.

Dombrandt didn't do enough. Gave away a stupid penalty, lost the
ball on the floor once, made one or two nice carries but we
didn't see anything special from him. Admittedly he did put in a
try saver on the line but Farrell got all the plaudits for
"helping" with that one.
Dombrandt, rightly or wrongly, needed a big performance. Jack
Willis provided one. Dombrandt didn't. And given that Borthwick
seems determined to relive England's 2011 World Cup, I fully
expect this negative approach to be what we're going with for
the rest of the year, so we'll pick a trucker like Tom Willis or
Billy and stick with that I expect.

Had a really good weekend in Dublin despite the result. We
travelled expecting England to be pumped but that was far from
the case. Dublin was it’s usual hospitable self and the Irish
fans we chatted to were delightful company on the whole. A world
away from the social media sniping and nonsense that seems to
peak around the 6 nations.
I’ll watch the game back later but watching it live it was
refreshing to see a vast improvement on my wasted afternoon at
Twickenham last week. Still way off what it could be but they
didn’t embarrass themselves. Don’t think Dommers has done enough
to nail down his spot. Mako is still an empty shirt for me,
Ribbans put in a proper shift, Slade was anonymous.

It's pretty depressing that a lot of fans are saying England
played really well. We were not awful, like we were last week.
But it's a stretch to say we were good.
No ambition at all. 10 man rugby, hoping to bully / bore the
other team to death. It might work against some teams but not
the best ones.
While Farrell was better than he has been, and actually got his
kicks, did he ignite the backline at all? No. I guess it depends
what people want from their 10. Do you want them to create
something or just marshall a very conservative gameplan
effectively.
Genge has been disappointing this 6 nations, and Sinckler too.
Slade has been anonymous. Not sure why Watson kept getting
picked.
Dombrandt didn't seem to pick the clever lines that makes him
stand out for Quins. Not sure if that's because there were no
opportunities or just because he can't do it at that level. He
is not a "bosh" style no 8 like Billy, so not sure how suited he
is to the current gameplan.

I'd have Will Stuart starting the RWC instead of Sink. He was
excellent in Oz, so if he can prove his fitness he is a shoe in.
Kyle would be a good off bench option for sure.
Alex I think will be lucky to make the RWC squad. Mercer I think
will be hard to ignore, and I can imagine EJ going for a hybrid
player who can cover 8 if needed, IE having Ludlam in the squad.
I'd like to see both Ribbans and Chessum as the second row.
Itoje has been living off his achievement 2/3 years ago for
quite some time now

I actually thought that Irelands 2nd try was
Dommers-esque....coming off the inside shoulder and straight
through the gap. Just sad England can't create like that.
Honestly bring all of those mentioned above in and leave Smith,
Dommers etc at home. If that's the game plan, why taint them
with the stigma? Midfield is anonymous, too much kicking and
back 3 there to watch the oppo run tries in. What was the point
in picking Arundel without Marcus and March in there? Tuilagi
has never been able to pass so playing outside him is another
waste.
Forwards were much better, as expected and we will probably end
up in a semi final at the WC but not because of a successful
gameplan, because we are slightly less mediocre than the rest of
the mediocre teams and the draw is kind. If we get past
Argentina, that is.
