In real time there was no way he could avoid it. Ridiculous
decision. There were terrible inconsistencies from Peyper and
his team. I wonder what he had in his pipe ....

OK - now there's something to argue about. Watch the very first,
early, pulled back shot where they track the England player. To
me he runs in from a long way out at at any time could vary the
direction he's running. He can see what's happening in front of
him, he has plenty of time to go for a hit/tackle. Instead he
uses that time to keep standing up and to turn his shoulder
while still moving forward. He actually jumps into contact.
Sorry, but I don't see the mitigation. I see he was unlucky the
Irish player makes head contact, maybe there's something to be
had from that but I don't see the "He couldn't do anything
different" argument. He chose not to do anything different and
paid the price.

I think you're right. What's not clear to me is what he was
actually trying to do. If he's trying to get out of the way,
then why? If he was hoping to make a tackle, then how? There was
a comparison earlier in the thread with players doing a pick &
drive, but that's not how you defend against that. It's also not
what you do when a player is running straight at you.

Seems the ref needs to study the guidance again.
A fair few apply from that section, certainly the change in
height (gathering the ball) and where he didn’t have time to
change his position massively to avoid the collision.
The general consensus I’ve seen is that it was the wrong call,
funnily enough apart from those with Irish sounding names or
their location being the Emerald Isle

I'm not suggesting for a moment that this is what happened, but
are we getting to an area where players can duck their heads to
make contact, and have an opponent sent off? I really hope not.
I watched the incident several times on the TV, and I don't
think there was any malice in the collision, nor was there a
high level of danger that would warrant a red card. I appreciate
the rules are there for a reason, but I've seen worse go
unpunished. This was more a moment of indecision than anything
else.

In real time it looked to me as though he was turning out of the
tackle, problem is that once you start all of the slow motion
replays you can convince yourself of anything, harsh decision in
my view but it is what it is.

In real time it was nothing. Once they did it in slow time and
the Irish crowd over dramatically has their “oohhhs” and
“beejaysus!” The ref seemingly was convinced
