I think fans and players need to decide amongst themselves what
sort of sport RU is to become. Do we want a contact sport with
risk or should it become something else?
Boxing and martial arts are still socially acceptable. In my
opinion this is ruining the game.

In my opinion, the players have control of the matter in their
own hands in the majority of cases.

Do they...really? Ben Curry was tackled by two irish players in
the 2nd half, both their shoulders were bashing his head during
the tackle.
When making a tackle neither the tackler nor player getting
tackled has any real control over where their head ends up.
Should defenders avoid contact just because the ball carrier is
leading with their head? Is that really the sport we want?

Mixed feelings on this one.
On one hand ball carrier ran head first and head down directly
into tackler which should have been mitigation.
On the other, tackler made no attempt to tackle, could see it
coming and turned and braced for impact thereby leading with the
shoulder.
The tackler should either have attempted a proper tackle or got
out of the way, the decision to turn and brace was wrong one and
caused a head injury.

Good summary, although Keenan doesn't run head first and head
down. He momemtarily stoops to collect a bouncing ball. I don't
think you quite meant it like that Sketchley, but I think it's
important to distinguish it from the tap and goes we see near
the line where props/hookers charge forward with their nose
about an inch of the ground...
For me the sudden change of height of Keenan should be a
mitigating factor, but presumably as he's not attempting a legal
tackle mitigation can't be applied, hence the red.
The question is does Steward have time to make a legal tackle
and Peyper thought the answer to that was yes.
It is a tough one, as ninety-nine times out of a hundred a block
like that doesn't result in head contact and its a simple
penalty only call.

Other than not going forward in the first place I don't know
what Freddie Steward could do to avoid contact with the head at
the speed it all happened.

Either way, surely the 'tackle' was non dominant, wasn't it? He
definitely wasn't moving forward.
So, at most, yellow?

Watched in realtime, not in ridiculous slo-mo, Steward is facing
changing circumstances and doesn't have time to react. If the
tackler should prioritise their decisions around the
ball-carrier's head then the ball-carrier should be doing the
same.
This level of micro-analysis and ref-by-replay will be the death
of the sport.
American Football introduced padding and helmets to address this
issue in the past. Head injuries in that sport are now far
higher directly as a result of wearing helmets.

I thought there was mitigation. There was a forward pass so it
was an unexpected play and Keenan was very low and in a very
vulnerable position. But what did for Steward was turning his
shoulder.
It is the inconsistency which is frustrating. There are
different interpretations in every game with different refs and
TMOs. Any incident can result in anything from not even looked
at to no penalty to yellow card to red. The differences between
no penalty and red card seem tiny and not always clear.
For me, a red card is a big sanction which should be reserved
for deliberate or reckless play. I don’t think Steward’s was
either.
They need to issue protocols or advice before the World Cup
otherwise it is inevitable that a big showpiece game will be
spoilt by a marginal red card and the tournament will be
diminished or there will be a red card in one game and a similar
incident in another with no sanction.

If the ref wants to be taken seriously with his calls, then the
shoulder charge to Ludlam should have also ended in a red.
