Brown had one of Steward's problems back in 2007 - his stride
pattern made him slow to accelerate. He worked on that and
became far more effective as a result.
But he always had exceptional positional sense - right from his
first game. He's been beaten for pace on occasion or caught out
by the bounce of the ball, but I've been worried since Steward
broke onto the international scene at how many times I've seen
him chasing across forlornly into space he should have been
holding.
And I don't think it's at all unreasonable to point out how well
Brown has been playing - regardless of age, to come in and have
that sort of impact week on week from a standing start suggests
he's not lost anything in his time away from the game.

It depends what you want from your fullback. Instinctively I'd
prefer a speedster with more attacking threat, but that's just
me.
Steward is a defensive northern hemisphere fullback who has
brought some real pluses to the team. He is outstanding under
the high ball, has a big boot on him and I'd say his x-factor is
his size, which means he inevitably does make meters when
carrying the ball back and is able to buy extra time for support
to arrive so rarely gets turned over. And he has notched a few
tries in an England shirt, so he does contribute in attack,
although not to the extent I'd like to see.
Positionaly there is room for improvement but he is still young
and I've no doubt he'll improve. I also think he's not been
helped at times as there seems to be an obsession to move the
pendulum around to ensure he's the most likely kick receiver.
DuPont exploited this expertly when kicking a 50/22 when
Steward/JVP were crossing over unnecessarily.
Unfortunatelty Steward's major weakness, which is a lack of real
top end pace, is exacerbated by those currently around him.
Steward, Malins, Watson, Slade.... all excellent players but not
one of them has the gas to really frighten international
defences. I don't like the balance of our backline and if it
were me, I'd be picking a couple of flyers in there.

Steward is a great under the high ball, and up there with the
best in the world. But, that's it. He might as mentioned have
time to work on his offensive issues, but top sides needs a try
scoring threat from the whole back 3, not just the wingers, and
he doesn't really offer that. I'd argue Nick David offers more
threat. Is Malins the answer? He prefers FB and it was part of
his decision to go to Bristol, but I think overall we have seen
enough of him at this level to suggest he's a very good club
player, but not going to pull up trees. I think Arundel could be
that Jason Robinson we are looking for post RWC if he is allowed
to grow into that position.
Slade baffles me. Lauded as a playmaker, with that boot, he's
been anonymous. I'd personally like to see Dingwall involved
more, who bafflingly appears to be behind Guy Porter.

Steward's lack of pace is real problem in defence too, there's
no way he should have let Ramos score the 1st try last weekend.

Dombrandt got a lot of stick against France for his last ditch
defence (I think their last try?) but theres no way a 8 should
be left in the position Alex was, the whole back 3 were
atrocious defensively that day. Watson was the biggest culprit
(Funny that, a player who hasn't cut his teeth properly this
season chucked straight in has been poor against the first good
side he's come up against).
I'd personally like to see OHC and Arundel on the wings this
week, or even OHC and Joe.

If as reported Farrell has a dodgy ankle, with his kicking being
around 44% (IIRC) before his injury, then maybe Slade is there
to kick any pens/conversions? I can't think of another reason
why he'd be picked over Joe Marchant.

He has 7 tries in 21 appearances, which is a better strike rate
than most England fullbacks, better than Thomas Ramos or Liam
Williams, and level with Keenan & Stuart Hogg. Also better than
Malins (but worse than Watson).

That's a good rate for a fullback, but I always think back three
players should be assessed by credit and debit.
Ben Cohen, for instance was worth 10 points a game for England -
3 because he averaged a try every other game, and 7 because he
made at least one try saving tackle a game.
Steward has a lot in the credit column, but I'm increasingly
worried by how many tries he's leaking. He had a good game
against Wales because they kept kicking to him, but a shocker
against France because he kept leaving space they could kick
into. A good positional fullback controls the game by always
being somewhere they can cover a lot of the field, and didn't
manage that. Some of that seems to be down to the system they're
playing - but some of it is down to him as a player.

Yeah, but you weren't the one talking about his lack of try
scoring threat, so let's keep the arguments in their lanes ;-)
