Think its time for the Taxi, we have gone downhill since he
arrived, I can't see what purpose he serves.

I can't help thinking how well we did when we didn't have a
coach.

Its a difficult one. Who is out there now that could come in and
improve us to the next level?
Matson has been OK, but underwhelming at times. We've lost a few
games we would on another day had lady luck on our side (Bristol
at home, Exeter away). The main concern I have is there is no
consistency. To go from that Exeter performance, to that Bristol
performance, after only losing several players is very alarming.
I haven't been too convinced hearing some comments from Matson,
where it seems sometimes he does not appear to grasp things. (IE
referencing how good the division is, with teams regularly
changing spots, but in our case it was only going down
further...)
Do I think we will become a regular top 4 side dominating sides?
Probably not, particularly if we are not replacing Marchant and
Louw with similar quality. But, I do accept the grass is not
always greener. The premiership next season will only be more
competitive, as I think Bath now have the foundations to
challenge the top 4.
Steve Diamond would be on my list of any potential replacements
as I think he could add something, but for now I think we need
to give Matson some more time to see what the plan/vision is..as
of yet its still unclear, but 2 seasons in he needs to start
getting a better return.

A lot depends on Evans coming back I reckon. And bringing Danny
Wilson in feels like a Plan B to me.

For me, this season has been very stop-start. Losing the 4 games
has means that there has been too many breaks in the season.
Then, added to that, losing players to international call ups
and the disruption of BG14 being cancelled.
Then, we lost our main playmaker for 1/2 the season due to
picking up an injury while playing at inside centre for England.
This has meant that there has been no opportunity to get any
momentum or to get a run of games for the players to gel as a
team and to play themselves into form.

Steve Diamond (whom I would not want and I don’t believe fits
the Quins ethos) has just gone to Edinburgh supposedly until end
of this season but more likely for a trial to see if it suits.
Not sure why you are hitting on Matson whose role is not defined
outside the team? He seems to me to be the glue for them all
trying to work with the huge lack of funds available for the
squad for this and next season.

Following on from who is out there. Who is bringing on the next
generation of coaches and DoRs? What do we expect the career
path to be? If the top clubs only ever bring in coaches who have
worked in the top clubs, how does a new coach start their
career?
Obviously, Quins have brought nick Evans on from player to
skills coach and he has found a place with England - though I am
not sure how much influence he has in that set up - is he ready
to step up to be a head coach / DoR?

Is it because we didn't have a coach, or because our
international-standard players weren't getting picked for
international duty in the 20/21 season?
The simple fact of the matter is that the London clubs get
completely screwed by the salary cap. The huge difference in
cost of living between counties such as Surrey and
Leicestershire - without any sort of London weighting to
compensate - means that we have significantly less ability to
build sufficient strength in depth. If you're getting offered
£60k by a club and that can get you a one bed flat in Surrey or
a 4 bed house in Leicestershire, where are you likely to go if
you're good enough?
Each of the London clubs seems to have handled this differently.
Irish have an International-standard 10 who they know isn't ever
going to be selected by Ireland again, but apart from that don't
tend to suffer too much from losing internationals and usually
come strong in the international windows as a result.
Sarries "cheated" the salary cap, although arguably not by more
than the unfair advantage it gives to some of the other clubs,
and if they're not cheating it now, it probably still helps that
they've got a reputation for winning, so players are potentially
willing to come for less to be in the shop window. Their
training base location in St Albans also makes it much, much
easier for their players to live a bit further out at much lower
cost than it is for the Quins or Irish players.
Then that leaves Quins, who with all our internationals can beat
any team on the day, but who really suffer from a lack of
strength in depth when key players are away on international
duty, except for the occasional freak season where they're not
getting picked for whatever reason.
Until the salary cap is fair, what's the point criticising a
coach with one hand tied behind his back for half the season?

Jury is out but this year hasn’t been ideal for a lot of reasons
The front end of this season has been destroyed by injuries and
international availability issues. There was a long, talented
injury list this year for a long time. Care, Dombrandt, Smith,
have played zero minutes of prem rugby together.
We are are hard ground team and the losing run coincided with
this injury period and the grounds stopping our style of play.
The coaching staff need to prove that this side can adapt.
Launch will be massive for us on this front. Bringing in a
lineout coach to allow flannery to focus on defence full time is
the right move.
One more year seems right. Long offseason to get things bedded
in. We shouldn’t have to be without the England guys for as long
again. Failure to deliver next year might mean a change.
