Season Tickets this week?

I presume on the basis of the momentum from today's stellar
performance against Bristol, the Marketing Dept is going to send
out invitations to renew season tickets, presumably at the
significantly increased prices that we've been softened up for.
I was going to write 'inflated' instead of 'increased' but since
(as I understand it) there's a 2,500-person waiting list, they
can lose a ton of us and not really mind.

You don't think the club has been hit cash wise by post covid,
having to pay back the gov's covid loan, losing two teams from
the premiership and having to limit the Big Game and move it
elsewhere? We were losing money at the old season ticket prices,
so what can they do but put up prices?

A reminder that paying for a season ticket is voluntary.
And for most of the past decade we've been bang average or
worse, but we've still had price increases and ended up with
around the same number of season ticket holders.
Quins settling back to their accustomed 6th or 7th place might
see off a few glory hunters, but we're not quite at JK levels of
fan dismay just yet.
And on top of that we've seen two Prem clubs vanish this year,
lost 800k on having to move the Big Game - so as per the post
above...I'm not sure what the alternative looks like.

“Glory hunters” is a bit unfair.
A decreasing number of sensible kick-off times is a big issue
for many fans. Add to that a season starting much later than
normal (so less Autumn games and more Winter freezes), a likely
jaunt in the 2nd tier European competition (even before getting
into the stupid format of European competitions) and a
Premiership where some teams seem to still have bottomless
pockets despite the salary cap changes, and it no longer adds up
for everyone. Financial backdrop that we find ourselves in will
impact the decisions of many too.
I agree there isn’t anything Quins can do but domestic rugby in
England as a use of people’s time and money is in a tough place
in 2023.

There's a lot of truth in this. Friday night and Sunday kick-off
times are a disaster for most Quins supporters. Ticket re-sale
is hardly the answer to that. Now we're going to be paying more
money for fewer matches (two fewer teams in the Prem once again)
bolstered by pointless exhibition fixtures like the Baa-Baas
(i.e., a scratch team with a fancy name). That plus the delay in
announcing match dates and KO times throughout the season, for
TV reasons, means it's impossible to organize the other things
that most families need to do in life (or, we organize them
anyway and risk missing a match). Since we're also likely to be
in the second-rate Challenge Cup playing some Romanian or
Italian team (yawn) that just increases the disillusionment.

Do what other businesses do and cut costs?

Maybe not the easiest thing to do.
The biggest expense for the club is wages for the players and
coaches.
There are 110 people on the payroll in this area.
There would be 3 approaches:
1. reduce peoples salaries.
2. reduce the number of people (i.e. redundancies)
3. replace highly paid with lower paid (e.g. Lose Andre and use
Lenny)
#1 Would probably be difficult. It was done during Covid.
Reducing players contracts affects morale and would probably
impact results on the field.
#2 We already think that there probably needs to be more
coaching staff. So, the option would be to cut player numbers.
This might leave us short in certain positions and would likely
impact results on the field.
#3 If this was done for all of the bigger earners - e.g. Smith,
Donners, Andre, etc, then we would save loads of money. But -
the only silverware we would ever win is if we were to win the
Championship to get promoted back into the Premiership.

The area that Premiership Rugby needs to sort out is the
broadcasting rights.
The Top 14 earn around a £100 million a year from Canal+.
I think we get around £40 million from BT.
The extra £4 million (or so) to each club every year would
really help with the finances. The extra TV coverage would also
probably mean that the clubs themselves would save money that
they spend on their own marketing as the TV companies would be
spending more of their money marketing the product. Better TV
coverage would also lead to other areas such as extra
merchandise sales.

Except they're demonstrably not "a disaster for most Quins
supporters". The matches sell out on Friday nights and Sundays.
They may be a disaster for you (though I suspect it's more "a
time I struggle to make"), in which case if the season ticket
isn't good value for you then don't buy one. At the moment,
there are plenty of people who seem to want one.
If that starts to change, then the club will need to respond by
reducing price rises or finding other sources of revenue. But
Quins is a business, and a loss making one at that. Its
incumbent on the club's employees to do what they can to reduce
that gap. Getting television revenue (which is the primary
reason for Friday and Sunday games) is one route; filling the
stadium is another.
The club is achieving both of these at the moment. As long as
there are 14,500 people who are willing to pay for seats one way
or another for every game, they're entirely justified in what
they're doing.
