I think replacing Malins and Slade is recognition that they keep
getting shown up like this (and I like Malins!), whereas the
pack has actually looked like it's improving and seemed to be
becoming a real area of strength for England before yesterday.
Which is why I think selection doesn't change that performance.
Something else went very wrong and in those cases you have to
look at the coaching and preparation.

Clearly the solution (and hence the only change) will be to swap
Smith for Farrell. Probably.

I think Dommers would be incredibly lucky to keep his place -
thought he was really poor yesterday, Sinckler was awful too -
countless times he failed to clear property at the breakdown.
In fact the whole pack was awful - which made JVP look worse.
Marcus had a poor 2nd half, but seems to be copping a lot of
unfair criticism for his defence.
Also Freddie Steward got done for pace a few times, the first
try he has to make sure he can get to Ramos, particularly with
Slade haring back.

For the last few tries it seemed like Steward wasn't even
trying. Or he had some form of cramp. Or he's just not very
quick. I was also surprised that he was outjumped, after letting
the ball bounce from a kick.
I thought he looked poor, yet paper reviews thought he was the
best England player. Granted, I didn't see the first half.

years to rebuild the England team and this feels about the same.
But Jonnie and Matt Dawson emerged from that and the rest is
history

Steward had multiple moments of high quality with huge impact.
He also made several big errors and was exposed for pace a few
times.

Have to admit to a few chuckles watching today's game, too - not
least when seeing Duhan van der Merwe's tribute to England's
performance and the Scottish pack getting murdered by the
remnants of Ireland's injury glut. Getting battered at the scrum
when the opposition have lost both hookers, and not being able
to get hold of the opponent's ineout when a 7 is throwing in....
Ireland very good given all the problems.

Unsurprisingly, Ireland prepare for such eventualities. If they
had reverted to uncontested scrums they would have been reduced
to 14 as it would have been their 'fault'. Similarly, both
flankers regularly practice line out throwing (unlike Marler's
experience) because they don't need to practise their flanking
jobs - they already know those. This level of professionalism
must be relatively straight-forward with a settled squad (which
Scotland also have!).

I don’t disagree with any of this but I do wonder why more
players don’t do the same - even if just at club level.
But then I’m also of the opinion that young props should learn
the basics of playing on the other side of the scrum - and would
if the national coach suggested it would help them gain more
caps.
