You missed an all round dreadful England performance.

That result was down to a gutless performance from the forwards;
Marcus was on a hiding to nothing.
Sometimes you need your arses kicked in order to progress. eg
England before the 2003 WorldCup when we were obliterated by the
Aussies (Wilkinson’s first game in an England shirt, if I recall
correctly)

Marcus was powerless to influence that result and battled
bravely. The French were so much stronger and quicker than
England up front and generally better in every department. We
didn’t help ourselves though with unforced errors that France
seemed to avoid.

Marcus was pretty poor, which was better than a good half of
that team managed.
Think we all know that when an entire team plays like that,
there's something rotten at the core and it's rarely a selection
or player talent problem.

The Tour of Hell was in 98. It was 15 months before the World
Cup and we played a load of (what were then) kids. England
subsequently slunk out of the 99 World Cup in France at the
quarter final stage.
We now have 6 months until the World Cup. We played our best
available XV. And we’re going to slink out of the 23 World Cup
in France at the quarter final stage.
