I think there is a modicum of logic in this observation from SB
       - let Smith have a good thrash v Chiefs and he's back in the
       squad on Sunday.

Yes of course there's logic in what he's saying, but it's not
outlandish to suggest that his plan is to bring ford back in -
he's not likely to say "I don't rate Smith at all, regardless of
his performances I was just waiting for Dan Kelly or George
       ford"

As a glass half full kinda guy, I'd like to think SB would see
Marcus have a blinder at Twickenham, and go to himself "Well, no
one really expects us to turn over France/Ireland, what do I
have to lose giving Owen a little rest this week?".

Well I never. It appears we've all misjudged you...

And it's the training squad he's talking about, not the final
       match squad.
Ford's performances have been dire so far because he's woefully
short of match sharpness having been out for so long and only
having played a match and a half or whatever. Marcus is short of
match sharpness because Borthwick refuses to play him. Daft.

It's a 3-day camp from yesterday so I'm hoping that there is a
chance that Ford could be on the bench for us on Sunday

Smith still very much in contention, apparently

They've taken what Borthwick's said and add a hell of a lot to
it. Borthwick has "challenged" Marcus to prove his worth and his
match sharpness at the weekend, and has said he'll be back in
       the training squad on Sunday.
That is a long, long way from saying he's in strong contention
       for a starting spot.

Smith is only in contention for a start against France if
Farrell is injured. His performance on Saturday will have no
bearing on England selection. Greenwood was spouting nonsense
saying that if Smith "bosses" it on Saturday it'll show
Borthwick he should be considered for a start. Smith has bossed
it for Quins plenty of times.
Borthwick wants to play 10 man, percentages rugby. If in doubt,
kick and defend. That's his prerogative as head coach. Just
silly pretending that it has anything to do with Smith's
       performances
