A player for Reading Sirens has successfully sued a player for
Bracknell Ladies. She claimed that she had been left paralysed
as a result of a "belly-flop" tackle. The judge said that the
tackle was a "reckless and dangerous act" that "fell below an
acceptable standard of fair play ". There was also evidence
that revenge was involved. Damages, yet to be assessed, will
apparently be paid by the RFU insurers.

I ploughed my way through most of the judgement. Sounds like an
overly aggressive player who massively overstepped the mark.

Saw this earlier. The two stills shown on the BBC website don't
make things too clear. Horrific injury though. There must have
been some contortion of the spine involved, rather than simpy a
player flopping on another? The article mentions grabbing of the
legs.

The full verdict had more stills but in essence my read was that
the attacking player was picking up the ball from the base of a
ruck so was bent at the waist and knees. Tackler lies on top of
the attacking player and wraps underneath the attacker's thighs
(see photo). In doing so, she holds the attacker in a folded
position. Tackler then drives forwards and down so the attacker
is driven into the ground whilst still folded.

Thanks for clarifying. I'd only seen two stills on the BBC.
That's quite a shocking way to purposely cause pain and/or
injury. I'm imagining the offending player will get a life ban.
This really resonated with me as I've played against both of
these clubs and still know a few past ladies players.

Unfortunately, he verdict doesn’t paint a very edifying picture
of Bracknell women’s team as a whole and the defendant in
particular.

Just took the time to read the judgement and agree completely.
Rams ground is a short walk from where I live so I'll go along
and support any kind of benfits they will doubtless arrange.
Interesting to note the (initial) contrast in viewpoints between
Ed Morrison and Tony Spreadbury, the latter seeming to do an
almost 180 under cross-examination.
Now for the award. Hopefully it will be huge, but who pays?
Presumably the club has isurance, but with some form of excess?
Or contribution in light of the player's actions? Or maybe the
player herself will be required to pay a contribution?

The Judges statement is damning. So is the dismantling of the
defence's so called expert
What i am almost as shocked about is that in this day and age of
social media, there is currently no statement on Facebook,
twitter or their own web site apologising for the incident.
The offending player is still pictured as a player (although
isnt playing this season)
I appreciate that the incident was a number of years ago, but it
doesn't take much to put some pre-prepared words on the
differing platforms.

I hadn't looked at the website until you mentioned it. No
mention at all, which is pretty poor. They could have prepared
for whatever outcome and had a stantement ready, as you point
out.
One thing though - the images reminded me of playing there. Not
a nice place to visit. Rarely a good game. And one time they had
Chris Wright (ex-Quins) playing at scrum half.
