He is, of course, the type of player that a club like Quins
already have built their team around.
Probably the only thing a French club could offer that Quins
can’t is the squad budget to have a better shot at the Champions
Cup. But they’d equally have to offer a coaching team to match,
and I am not sure which coaches would be an improvement on NEv.
Toonie, maybe, but he’s busy. Robertson, but he’s strongly
tipped for the All Blacks’ job. Who else?

Similarly marchant. He has literally never played as badly in
his entire career as slade did vs Italy.

He may be down the pecking order for England, but what about the
Lions? It would be a tad embarrassing for Borthwock if Marcus
got the shirt and played as we all know he can.

Borthwick has shown he's not afraid to drop big names if he
thinks there's a better option, I can see Marcus playing a role
off the bench if he's utilised properly and after the WC he will
be in pole position to be England's 10 if he keeps his form.

Not sure Borthwick has shown that at all. Same as all our
coaches for the last umpteen years, he's kept Farrell over
Smith, Slade over Marchant,
He's possibly shown he will drop players who are over the hill
(Youngs, Billy) but he's not dropped any big names who are
underperforming but still "young enough". Itoje, Slade, Farrell,
he's just brought back Watson for heaven's sake - they guy
hasn't done anything for years.

Borthwick made the mistake of making Farrell captain which
pretty much renders him undroppable.
My only hope is that he lives up to his reputation for being a)
highly analytical and b) brutal with his decision-making.
I genuinely don’t know how Farrell can keep his bulletproof
mantle whilst continually under-delivering for such an extended
period. Deciding that he’s not a 12 is a good first step, but if
he keeps playing like he did against Italy at 10, you’d hope his
race is run …
Whether that opens the door for Marcus is a very different
question though. With Ford back to fitness, I wouldn’t be at all
surprised to see him come back in as second choice.

I see the problem as the other 14 (OK except for the Harlequins
contingent). You're trying to turn a dozen supertankers in very
little time. There's a danger they'll fall betwixt and between,
neither playing a proper kicking game or a proper running game.
Better to stick to what they know, the England that are flat
track bullies. Looking good beating up weaker teams but not able
to cope when seriously challenged. That's why you might see Ford
and Farrell picked.It got us to a RWC final last time and I'll
bet Borthwick has been given a relaxed target of semi-final if
possible, quarter-final minimum.
