As it stands he will be wasted though, only getting 10-20 mins
per game at best, hamstrung with a handbrake 12 outside him who
couldn't ever possibly be substituted as he's captain (unlike
Dylan Hartley who was substituted when England captain)

I think sadly Marcus is going to potentially slip through the
cracks of being an England great.
Unless OF calls it a day after the WC for internationals (which
I doubt) it will require some guts from SB to drop him. If he
does, he can build for the next WC. If he sticks around and so
does SB, I imagine someone else could fill that “young up and
coming” role as Marcus will be 28 at the next WC, which is still
fine, but I guess we will see.

I see it a different way. Borthwick can't count on Farrell or
Ford still being around for 2027, so it would make sense to
refresh the squad after the 2023 RWC.
The bigger question is whether Marcus Smith is the person that
Borthwick sees as the fly half to lead the charge - some of the
more Tigers-oriented fans on 606 do not see M Smith as a
"Borthwick-style" fly half and think that Fin Smith might be the
answer. I think that would be a huge miss for England - provided
they have an attack coach who is prepared to build the attack
around Smith's talents.

It's like Carlos Spencer v Andrew Mehrtens all over
again....except Mehrtens was an exceptional 10, just in a
different way.

There are a few non-Quins fans (Tigers in particular, I think)
who feel that Marcus is a bit of a show pony who's been
overhyped. I'm sure it's just jealousy but it would be better if
he got the chance to prove them wrong, or right to be honest.

I imagine Smith will head to France if he isn't in Borthwick's
plans after the RWC. The French media adore him, he is exactly
the type of player that a club like Toulon, Stade, Lyon or
Montpellier would build their team around.

Tigers fans are bitter about how George Ford has been treated.
Which is fair enough, because Ford is brilliant and a much
better international flyhalf than Farrell, but it's not exactly
Smith's fault.
Ditto certain Scottish fans who are very sensitive over Finn
Russell.

It just goes to show that those non Quins fans don't watch him
and see the non-flashy stuff that he does. To be fair though, I
don't watch their 10s unless I'm watching their whole game and
the highlights don't show enough to draw an conclusion.
Agree with CG above, he'd be the new Sir Johnny over there and
all these one eyed fans will be screaming for his inclusion...

I wonder how many more pragmatic and dull coaches we will have
before somebody with some ambition gets a go?
