O/T Is Wales v England On?
DIR By: Domestos

We are due to be told today (Wednesday Feb 22nd) if the Wales v
England international is going ahead.

If the Welsh go on strike that will a first - or did England go
on strike in 1995?

I thought it was just a threat from the English players but I
thought it was before 1995.
Ok, 1995 was the old farts comment but Wikipedia just says
Carling was reinstated after public pressure; I thought there
was also pressure from the England squad.

From Pitbull's column earlier this week, there was a strike in
2000 (ahead of an Argentine fixture)

FF, your URLs are too long to quote.
But the 1991 one was the one I remembered - that's why I was
confused above. I actually thought everyone knew at the time,
though. I think it was brought to a head by the RFU making money
out of the players' image rights but denying them that
opportunity.

I thought the 2000 one was the Image Rights one.

At the moment? No idea! In any case, it's worth having the Wales

It may have been about image rights but the game was
professional so they wouldn't have been denying the players the
opportunity.
I may have used the phrase loosely too 😁.

2000 was during the RFU's moratorium period, wasn't it? Where
the RFU was still amateur (and Dudley Wood and others were
trying to "protect" the players from the evils of
professionalism) but they allowed the clubs to experiment with
professionalism. It's basically how they ended up with the club
v country mess we still have (albeit much improved) today.
I don't have the book to hand, but I am pretty sure the image
rights strike was about the fact that the RFU was making money
from selling the players' images while not giving the players
any of those proceeds.

I think you're right about the strike but the club/RFU split had
happened back when the game went professional and was
irreversible by 2000.
