Haven't really thought about it for a long time,
Like others (old farts) I think I probably idolised Botham,
Daley Thompson, wasn't really a football kid.

Jimmy Monty, Charlie Hurley, Jimmy Greaves. Hutton and
Illingworth. The only rugby player's name I knew in my youth was
Alan Old - and that was because he taught me maths. Rugby
interest developed much later and early heroes were the '89
Lions - Evans, Richards, Teague.

Football: Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Gazza
Cricket: Dominic Cork, Darren Gough, Flintoff
Rugby: Lewis Moody, Martin Johnson, Jason Leonard

As a kid my first sporting hero was Bobby Moore. Quite simply an
icon, a gentleman, and a superb player. And a Hammer of course.
A few years later Roberto Duran became a hero to me.
My first rugby hero was Billy Beaumont. Partly because I was
playing lock by that time. But also for his leadership
qualities.
Latterly my rugby heroes would be Carlos Spencer and Chris
Robshaw, but topping them all would be Schalk Burger (and I'll
probably cop some flak for that).

I remember watching the Barbarians v NZ game in '73, so my first
hero was probably the Gareth Edwards - but then it was Daley
Thomson and Sir Ian Botham. Watching Boris Becker at Wimbledon
was awesome.

Outside rugby, (well sort of) Ellery Hanley, then Marvin Hagler,
Barry McGuigan from boxing. Not a huge football fan but for
some reason always liked Jan Molby from that 80's Liverpool side
- made it look effortless (maybe because there was indeed, not
much effort). Linford Christie, Tessa Sanderson, Steve Cram,
Michael Jordan and William "Fridge" Perry.

Chris Bonnington, Don Whillans, Joe Brown were my heroes as a
child.
