O/T Sporting heroes

Completely random post, and for no reason other than it came to
mind...
Who were your sporting heroes when you grew up? And who became
heroes to you?

As mentioned elsewhere, Moore and Skinner as a kid (I was
clearly destined to be a Quin!).
Richard Hill in my 20s. I have a huge admiration for Robshaw and
the way he conducts himself.

When I first picked up a rugby ball I wanted to be Rory
Underwood or Guscott.
DC has to be my favourite Quin.
Outside of rugby, I'd go Michael Johnson. I was 12 in 1996 and
the 200m final was a real wow moment.

Grew up in a football area … just down the road from The
Hawthorns (West Brom) … my hero as a youngster was Jimmy Greaves
… greatest goal scorer the game has ever seen
They say you should never meet your heroes but I was lucky
enough to meet Jimmy at a Sportsman’s Dinner in Huddersfield a
few years ago and he was great to talk to … and get his
autograph (prized possession)
I am sure I read somewhere that in his later years Jimmy enjoyed
watching Quins … although I don’t recall ever seeing any
reference on here to Jimmy having been spotted at The Stoop

Mine were the Worcestershire cricketers when they won the County
Championship in 1964 & 1965; but especially Tom Graveney & Basil
D'Oleveira.

Good thread Quinky. My first hero was Bobby Charlton ( the 60s
obviously), but stopped following football when I grew up. First
rugby hero Rory Underwood, then Lord Funbus of Barking.

Sylvester Clarke - West Indies Cricket.
Living and going to school in South Africa during the 70s and
80s as an immigrant was a bit of a challenge and for example,
sharing a school bus with the local Afrikaans school with the
constant jibes of "Rooinek" and "Soutie!" caused me to support
any team that was playing against South Africa.
Teams that came over and won were few and far between
(exceptions were the 1974 Lions and the Argentina team with the
great Hugo Porter.)
During the sporting boycott years, there were few highlights
- until, the rebel West Indian team came over. They were
awesome.
The highlight was Sylvester Clarke. The bowling conditions
suited his style and I can't recall seeing a bowler getting so
much seam movement since then.

As a kid, it was Daley Thompson.
In my teens Steve Redgrave and his various crewmembers. In the
2000s it was obviously the 2003 team but particularly Richard
Hill and Will Greenwood.
Over time I've also come to appreciate figures who didn't really
register properly in my youth. Jason Leonard and Ian McGeechan
are all-time sporting heroes for entirely different reasons.

Jason Leonard, Graham Gooch & Billy Bonds - 3 local boys for me
who all made good in my favourite sports, in that
order.....although it was weird as I played with and against Big
Jase at schoolboy level so his was more an admiration for what
could have been....now, an absolute icon
