It's a difficult one. My instinct and strong preference is that
there should be promotion and relegation and that league
position should always be based on merit.
The commercial reality of professional rugby in this country is
different. Most of the clubs lose money hand over fist and while
fanbases have grown they're still relatively small. We regularly
sell out out 14,800, Sarries just about get 9-10,000, Irish
rattle around at Brentford slightly less than they rattled
around the Mad Stad. While instinctively I'd love to see Ealing
in the Prem I'm struggling to see at what point they would
become a commercially sustainable competitive club being within
much less than 10 miles of 3 already existing Premiership clubs.

Can we help out in any way - would it be possible to make the
Stoop available? Might help the finances (and would give us two
home games against Ealing).

Ealing would have had to apply to use the Stoop before the
deadline.
The rumour over on Rolling Maul is Ealing Council sat on the
application and did not issue the safety certificate in time.

Presumably, in the case of Sale and Newcastle, the costs are
cheaper than other parts of the country.
E.g. the groundsmen in Newcastle and the people that work behind
the bar, ticket office, admin office, etc earn less in Newcastle
than their equivalent in London. The ground rent for the stadium
is less, etc, etc.
So - the club probably needs to earn less to cover the costs.
Also - I suspect that teams like Newcastle are spending up to
the Salary cap limit.

The Newcastle owner was on the GBR podcast last year and
confirmed that they didn't spend up to the cap as they plain
couldn't afford to.
