Jordan Peterson points out, how do you ensure that every single
identifying factor is included? And as for determoning the
"why", if you push equality of outcome then the "why" is
"because we want proportional representation". That way madness
lies.

Again I disagree. The "why" is to ensure that we have as wide a
talent pool as possible. In a results-based business, wouldn't
we want to attract the best of the best, regardless of their
background?
Propotional representation is a measure that the paths are known
by and available to everyone; not the goal in and of itself.

To some extent yes but that is based ultimately on my
upbringing. Had I never been introduced to rugby (especially at
such a young age), there is a far lower likelihood that I would
be playing now.

But ultimately it was your choice. Nobody forced you to play
rugby. For me there was no force to choose any sport at all.
Unless you consider my peer group, who were all football mad.
But I chose rugby. Football would have been an easier choice,
but I simply didn't enjoy it.

But if you push equality of outcome, you're likely not getting
the best talent pool. And the why of your outcome is that you've
forced it.

That depends. Yes, if you push for a quick fix of equality of
outcome by artificially changing the pool of talent. Not if you
get to the root causes of that imbalance and look to rectify
that situation.

Nobody has said I was forced to play rugby. But my choice was
definitely influenced by the experiences of my youth, the
availability of a club at a suitable level, friends who play,
etc..
I was forced to play football and hockey at school. Neither of
those sports stuck (I'd argue) because there wasn't a culture at
home that nurtured an interest in those sports.

I believe Asian mums would be very protective of their offspring
in what is a pretty violent sport. They are way more family
focused and pushed towards academia so picking up serious
injuries is really not an option IMHO

What does equality of outcome have to do with the widest talent
pool possible?

But by aiming for equality of outcome, you are by necessity
changing the pool of talent?
And in the case of people who just "prefer" one sport over
another (whether due to the enjoyment of playing or through
being naturally good at it), how do you "rectify" that?

I went to a comprehensive school and the only reason I was
introduced to rugby was because of a couple of the games
teachers played. I’m massively grateful for that (thanks Mr
Smart) because if they hadn’t had that personal interest I don’t
think I would ever have had that same exposure or interest as a
player or a fan. My very much working class parents didn’t
exactly encourage it, but as they saw I enjoyed it were happy
for me to crack on. So I think that your background and
influences have an awful lot to do with what sports you
ultimately gravitate towards, including your ethnic background
and traditional sports within that. There is only so much that
can be done from external influences to attempt to alter that
but any positive efforts should be applauded in my opinion.
Let’s face it, rugby union and the ethos surrounding it is the
best.
