If the leak is accurate, still not a bad team. I think Smith was
always going to be the one to make way, considering he's not the
captain (If SB wan't going to play both he and Faz).
Marcus/Mitchell of the bench would be a great pairing, also
bringing in Arundel off the bench could really add some danger
against a tiring Italian defense. Will be interesting how the
bench is though with the split, as accommodating Marcus who
isn't a multi role player) makes things slightly more difficult.

Having an outright 10 on the bench is pretty common.
Of the starters, Farrell is 10 and 12. Lawrence 12 and 13. Slade
12, 13, and a dash of 10 or 15 in an emergency. Malins 11, 14,
15, with a dash of 10 in an emergency. OHC a wing. Steward a
fullback and probably too slow for wing at this level but has
plenty of experience there.
So unless you want an emergency 10, you pick an outright 10 on
the bench. Everything else is fine no matter who goes down, with
wing the biggest issue, and given they obviously want Arundell
to get game time, having him on the bench as well makes sense so
that's covered anyway.
Have a bench of Rodd, Walker, Cole, Isiekwe, Ribbans, Mitchell,
Smith, Arundell, and you're good. The starting pack is a pretty
fit and largely young bunch so no demands to take people off
after 50 minutes. Isiekwe covers lock and back row, ditto
Chessum. Ribbans the outright lock replacement. Willis to start
and covers all 3 backrow positions, as does Ludlum to a lesser
extent.
Losing 2 backrowers would be a problem.

So, the scenario is, Italy are 12 points up at 60 minutes and
the backs can't get into the game. What do you do if you're
Borthers?
If you bring Smith on and move Farrell to 12, you know you're
not going to get go forward. If you take Farrell off, then
you're saying your choice to a)make him captain and b) start him
at 10 we're wrong.
Of course, it might be ok against Italy but with the 3 harder
games to come, it could all come crashing down around his
cauliflower ears very quickly!!!

We really put too much on who's captain, in almost all sports.
Many countries are just fine substituting their captain.
anyway:
Starting
15. Freddie Steward
14. Max Malins
13. Henry Slade
12. Ollie Lawrence
11. Ollie Hassell-Collins
10. Owen Farrell (C)
9. Jack van Poortvliet
1. Ellis Genge (VC)
2. Jamie George
3. Kyle Sinckler
4. Maro Itoje
5. Ollie Chessum
6. Lewis Ludlam
7. Jack Willis
8. Alex Dombrandt
Replacements
16. Jack Walker
17. Mako Vunipola
18. Dan Cole
19. Nick Isiekwe
20. Ben Earl
21. Alex Mitchell
22. Marcus Smith
23. Henry Arundell

Fairly good team.
Pack looks good, particularly if Maro finally turns up after not
really doing much for 5/6 England games.

Ribbans perhaps unlucky not to get a bench spot. Mako lucky to
still get picked too.
Otherwise - pretty decent. 12 & 13 have balance (at last),
whichever way round they play. Strong bench too. Shame it's
Faz and not Marcus at 10, but I don't think anyone expected it
to be any different when push came to shove.

Other than dropping Marcus I can’t hate that team at all. Didn’t
think they’d do it. Hopefully we perform.
It’s a bit bizarre from a Quins perspective that Marcus is on
the bench but his backup in Tommy is starting for Italy. don’t
get me wrong, Allan is a good player, but the drop off from
Marcus to him is substantial and it seems strange that one
starts at HQ this week and the other doesn’t.
