The latter because they're desperate to be seen to be doing
something in light of recent events.
The former because, well, it IS a song about a jealous stalker
stabbing a woman to death, and probably someone decided that
wasn't a great look - even if it is a great tune. The crowd
don't really sing it on their own and by all account it's been a
very rare thing to hear for the last decade. The choir hasn't
sung it for 7 years apparently. So it's a non-story.
I'm sure the principle of it will annoy people and that's
absolutely fine, everyone's entitled to their own opinion - but
it's a bit different to people being told not to sing it. The
crowd are perfectly welcome to sing it like they've been able to
do (and not done) for years...

I think if you take it within the context of what has happened
to females in the WRFU and the suggestion of sexual violence
towards them , you might see it as an avoidance of further
inappropriateness. A bit like you wouldn’t sing “ferry cross
the Mersey” if one had sunk and people had been drowned.

For Pete's sake just because a song references something it does
not encourage it or signify approval of it 🙄
Pretty much all classical art would be in trouble, as has also
been pointed out most opera, not to mention Bill Shakespeare....
