IF England turn it on come Saturday the Italy game will sell out
pretty quickly!

Maybe they will release some last minute cheap tickets if it
doesn't sell out, although that would piss off a lot of people
who have stumped up full price.
What is the cheapest ticket, £100? I personally couldn't justify
paying that sort of money for a game of rugby.

I think simple economics would dictate that nothing can be
classed as overpriced if there is maximum profit made.
Twickenham has traditionally pretty much sold out so my
assumption is that this leads to maximum profit.
What we don't know is how much the higher prices have lowered
the on-the-day spend - F&B, merchandise, etc.. It may be that
punters are loathe to buy a shirt if they have already spent a
small fortune on a ticket. However, as that is more
discretionary spend, I can understand why the RFU would opt for
the more guaranteed revenue of a higher ticket price.

There's defo never been as many tickets avail or on direct sale
as now for proper matches.
When I first started doing the First XV thing (then the
supporters club) you'd be able to buy a couple of tickets for a
match like Italy but that would be it.
Last 18 months been able to buy pairs of tickets to pretty much
every game with no problem at all after failing in the ballots.
Two days to go until England V Scotland and there are still
quite a few pairs/triple seats together -- you could in fact buy
a block of 25 in one lower tier block if you want, which I
assume means they've been released at short notice.

In the past they have released tickets last minute through local
schools.
I got tickets for practically free in the past when my kids were
at Chase Bridge school (in fact, I think they were free) and I
also got tickets when they went to Orleans.

Following England has been way too expensive for a very long
time.

Agreed. There's nothign quite like the buzz of 80k fans baying
for their team to get the blood pumping...but even though I
could probably afford it, it seems like a total rip-off to me. I
can't justify that price per ticket.

Understood. My (long ago) economics A Level taught me that you
keep your price as high as possible so that you sell the last
ticket seconds before kick-off … if your objective is to
maximise ticket revenue.
There are other aspects to it, for example keeping children
interested in the game (look at cricket), encouraging community
rugby, creating an atmosphere in the ground etc. It's worth
remembering the community game, 99% of the rugby played in this
country, is in a very bleak place at the moment. Kids rugby is
doing OK. Mens' amateur rugby is really struggling.

True -- and as prices have gone up (particularly with the change
of the east stand into a vast hospitality operation) the crowd
has got less interested (not just when we're losing) because so
many more than before are there on a corporate jolly.
But that aside, because you can easily argue that doesn't matter
as long as you're maximising revenue) this time the Scotland
match isn't sold out with two days to go and there are thousands
of Italy tickets, so we may be reaching the point where prices
have gone too high and they're making less money than they would
if they came down 10% (with the associated increase in
booze/food/merch spend per capita).

Don’t disagree with your second paragraph. My point was a
response saying that prices have been too high for some time. It
seems that we have now reached the maximum price at least for
the current market.
