That's my understanding too, at least as far as the Challenge
Cup is concerned. A few years back the top French teams would
make serious pushes to get the Champions cup (Toulon, Clermont,
Racing 92, primarily) but only if they're fairly sure they're in
no danger of falling down the Top 14 table as a result.

Except it doesn't follow that Clermont, La Rochelle and Toulon
finished 2nd, 5th and 6th in European qualifying last season,
       but 9th, 7th and 4th in the Top 14.
The previous season Toulouse made the Quarters while finishing
       12th in the league.

       I suspect the flowchart goes:
       Pouvons-nous gagner Le Top 14?
Oui - donner la priorité ŕ la ligue
       Peut-etre - [Gallic shrug]
Non - donner la priorité ŕ la coupe

So I reckon in champions cup English won 3 drew 1 lost 3 - the
french won 3 lost 3 honours even
in Challenge cup English won 5 lost 2 - the french won 2 lost
       6 honours le rostbif!
