Come on clear eviddnce we only lead two of the four Champions
cup groups and two of the five challenge cup groups better than
any other league so yes we are doomed

I’d say there’s plenty of perfectly good rugby journalism - but
the click bait of the Indy isn’t one of them - nor most of the
rugby blogs or sports article aggregator sites which are
basically self publishing for anyone with a keypboard. People
keep circulating pieces on here that are by some kid in college
who’s never had a job as a sports reporter.
Haven’t heard anyone credible spouting this risible nonsense.
Just because it’s got a byline doesn’t mean it’s journalism
these days.

On reflection, and seeing some of the highlights - this was a
pretty good opening weekend. Whilst for Quins, this year, I
think it’s good they don’t have the pressure of being in the top
tier competition as they rebuild, I really hope they are back in
it next year!

Not the greatest artictle and the caveat included for sundays
games has made the writer look a bit silly. However, personally
i have been worried about the prospects of english clubs in the
champions cup this year.
On the way to the stoop on saturday (had plenty of time on the
replacement bus) i had a good look at the fixtures and pools,
its hard to see where the wins and qualifiers are coming from.
English clubs are not as strong as their irish and french
counterparts with perhaps the exception of sarries and exeter.
Exeters failure to get the win at home to munster was so
disappointing considering the way they are dispatching the
opposition domestically.
Exeter can still qualify but theres added pressure now.
I know how strong leinster are but there is no excuse for the
winning margin on friday night. As for bath, well, thats one of
the most embarrassing moments in pro rugby. These two along with
leicester are consistent top 6 sides but there is something
wrong at each of them and they just dont look a threat in this
competion or frankly, the premier either.
Sunday did cheer me up a bit, great result for falcons, sarries
roll on with an away win to strong opposition and glouscester
can still qualify too. So its not all doom and gloom but sarries
are the only side who really look capable of challenging the too
sides in europe, although i might set aside some time to watch
exeters trip to munster.

As has been said before, the other countries give scant regard
to their club leagues. French teams aren't expected to win away
and Pro14 teams regularly put out 2nd teams.
Unless that changes, I can't see much changing. Apart from the
odd example, it's really only Sarries that really threaten this
state of affairs, remembering they were our only qualifier last
season (in last place) and lost their QF.
That said, I would always want to be in the premier competition.
I find it hard to get excited about the Challenge Cup other than
nice away days.

Whilst we'd probably all prefer to be in the Champions Cup, this
season will be about gelling and forcing a winning and battling
attitude - we're in this cup and there is some good opposition
in QFs if we can (should) qualify, hopefully with home
advantage. Win the cup - it's silverware and a winning way won't
do any harm.

I'm not sure it's right to say that the French prioritise Europe
over the Top 14. I accept that they generally don't bother about
winning away, but it was always my understanding that the Top 14
was seen as the bigger prize.
I also don't think the premiership cup can be used as an excuse
for not being able to focus resources on Europe. The Premiership
certainly but I cannot see the premiership cup featuring many
regular first team players.
