Slightly O/T: waist level tackling across all amateur rugby

I think this is a sensible decision that will start to flow
through into the senior game as players come up through the age
grades. I'd better start rethinking my view of what a tackle
should look like for when I am refereeing...

Problem is that you could get penalised under that for grabbing
mid chest at a players shirt in a desperate tackle attempt as
he's passing you. That's not right in my view, and I'm sure
that's not the only harmless scenario that's suddenly going to
become a penalty...

I was listening to the Flats and Shanks podcast this morning and
Shanklin made the point that (IHO) the only real change in
tackle tech will come when players who've grown up learning to
stay low start making their way into the pro teams. As things
stand, apparently aspiring pro players have historically been
taught to stop the offload.
This move would seem to be a step in that direction but forcing
all non-pro players to go lower.
Longer term, it should help to create more offloads which in
turn will arguably make a more attractive game - certainly fewer
rucks.

Not sure it will flow anywhere unless it is globally adopted and
could be an issue for aspiring pro players. Exactly which level
will you be able to go above the waist?

Academy players loaned out to Nat 1 or 2 teams will train under
current law, play under this law, then come back for a
Premiership Cup match and be confused.

And we're still not worried about this resulting in more
knee-to-head collisions? I'm not convinced this won't just
create new welfare issues - especially at amateur levels where
there is never going to be the same medical infrastructure
around a game.
Also, how are you meant to defend a pick-and-go from a metre
out? Just let them score?
I'm not a player myself but if my brother, his clubmates, and
Twitter is anything to go by this isn't going down well...

I'm sure plenty of people are unhappy; there always are some.
But tackle technique as coached is to target the thigh and has
been that way for years. The rest is Rugby League basically.
Ok, that's a bit simplistic but it's daft moaning about new
types of injury when it's not a new thing being introduced.
