Some strange objections there Rodney. One of the things I like
about Borthwick's opening squad is he seems to be taking
premiership form into account.
Young Finn Smith looks a decent prospect at 10 and has been
playing nicely for Saints.
Daly thoroughly deserves his spot as a 13.
Malins has been scoring plenty for Sarries.
Manu's had a run of games fot Sale and has genuine x-factor.
Pearson is a good shout and if he keeps playing well for the
next six months he'll get his chance, but back row is
particularly competitive.
Pretty sure Rapava-Ruskin is injured. He came off against
Sarries and didn't look happy.

It's worth remembering that World Rugby have changed the size of
squads you're allowed to take to the RWC. It was 31, now it's
33. That means that Coaches can start to think about potentially
having 3 SHs or FHs in their squad. In previous years, if you
were selecting the RWC squad, you'd pick 2 FHs. So theoretically
Borthwick would pick 2 out of Farrell, Ford & Smith, with the
third choice on standby in case of injury. Now he's free to take
all three, but he needs to know who the new backup (#4) is in
case of injuries either before or during the competition. So
it's only right that with Ford yet to make an appearance, he's
looking to see if F Smith has what it takes to be the next
option. I would guess he might be on the bench for the Italy
game. I'd guess the same will apply at SH as well.

I don't really put much stock in picking players who have
regularly been ropey at international level simply because they
are playing well for their club. Give the young lads who are
showing good form a go, but I don't see how Daly and Malins who
have repeatedly stunk the place out are going to suddenly show
international class because they've looked good for the club
which has destroyed almost everybody. They just aren't going to
get that advantage at international level.
Manu has not been in any sort of form, he hasn't shown genuine
x-factor for years.
Pearson needs 6 months but Smith doesn't is a strange take. He's
looked good at times, but I've seen him soil himself for Saints
on several occasions.

Pearson may well be ready now, but the reality is he has far
stiffer competition at flanker and doesn't yet have 12 to 18
months of standout performances to justify his inclusion over
the Curry or Willis brothers. You can throw Evans, Kenningham,
Underhill and Mercer all in to the mix too. The strength in
depth is ridiculous.
The third choice 10 isn't going to play, or will get 20mins
against Italy at most With Ford out, the only other contenders
at 10 would be Joe Simmonds or Orlando Bailey. Finn Smith has
been better than both of them. May as well get him in the
training squad to see if he's a future contender.

So can Marchant opt out of his switch to Stade - he must of
based it on not getting a sniff with Eddie.
Surely that’s the conversation for Tabs.

It would be nice to think that, but it's probably a done deal. I
would imagine that he will have a clause in his contract that
says "if I am picked for the RWC, I don't have to turn up until
I am done with England."

I said at the time, that Eddie is a red herring as a reason for
Marchant’s switch.
Anyone moving from next season can still play in the World Cup
as long as they haven’t yet played for their (non-English) club.
It’s therefore only games after England’s QF departure that
Marchant would be ineligible for.
Eddie was always going after the World Cup so those games would
always have fallen under a new coach.

Lawes and McGuigan have withdrawn, and George has to be a doubt
for Scotland. Walker and Dunn look like they are going to be in
the 23 (big chance for Walker in particular) and Ribbans is back
in.
