Pitch Change

Is it time we went to an artificial surface? We cannot play in
wet heavy conditions and as a running game is our tradition
surely now is the time to move on. Also with all the financial
issues it would surely be financially of benefit, pitch could be
used 7 days a week for Soccer and Rugby, hope its been or is
being looked at as surely its a way forward.

Or perhaps a hybrid pitch?

Maybe they are?! Maybe a reason for Paul Sykes to leave?!

It didn't prevent some excellent strike moves and the wet ball
was a far bigger problem than the pitch itself. It's a huge
expense and an unnecessary one.

I think you will find the management of the pitch is a Company
‘Nuture Gavin Jones’ Paul was employed by them. He won or was
a finalist in 2014 I seem to remember. He is quite ambitious and
wanted to work somewhere at one time where he could match the
training pitches to playing surface!!

I thought it already *was* a hybrid (4g?) pitch.

A hybrid pitch is mixture of natural grass with fibres woven in
to anchor the grass. They bring in a great big machine and
punch a million or so artificial 'blades of grass' into the
pitch and then grow normal grass around them. Desso is the main
brand name here. Twickenham & Wembley both have them. See here:

A 4G pitch is a fully artificial pitch. I've been told that 3G
/ 4G are marketing terms and there's no actual definition of
them. In a Spinal Tap style, 4G sounds better than 3G and I've
also seen boast of 5G as well. From a rugby perspective, the
key test is whether it's compliant with the relevant RFU / World
Rugby regs. There's a timelapse video of Rosslyn Park's
artificial pitch being laid, here:

I'm no expert*, but from looking at it, I don't think the Stoop
is a hybrid pitch.
* Just a middle aged man, with more of an interest in pitches
than I probably should have.

I was just being mischievous to stimulate comment. Paul was very
proud of his grass - no it is not a hybrid -. He also told me of
his ambitions last year. He was there on Saturday in a
spectating role, had a brief chat, he was very upbeat.

A quick google suggests that as recently as 2019 it was a
natural pitch (From this article about the Hockey pitch that was
installed for games that year
HTML https://www.schmitzfoam.com/success-stories/case-the-stoop#:~:text=The%20field%20at%20Twickenham%20Stoop%20is%20a%20natural%20grass%20surface%20and%20is%20the%20pride%20of%20the%20venue%20and%20the%20club.%20For%20England%20Hockey%20to%20successfully%20host%20an%20event%2C%20they%20would%20have%20to%20think%20outside%20of%20the%20box%20and%20be%20willing%20to%20surround%20themselves%20with%20partners%20eager%20to%20make%20things%20happen.).<br
/>I guess there's discussions to be had about cost outlay,
longevity (tying in with medium term plans for the stadium),
non-matchday use, etc.
