10 should be the ideal kicker, but it doesn't have to be. Anyone
can kick if they are good enough, and I wonder why we don't
allow others with the skill to take the kicks. Halfpenny, for
example, is a pretty fair kicker! There's no reason wings,
fullbacks or centres can't take the kicking duties. If we have a
known weakness in that area, give the duty to someone else
before the match - allows that person to prepare, and takes the
pressure off the 10.

Perhaps a certain Joe Marler could kick too? He has 100% record
with kicks at goal.

Absolutely agree with this. I think the problem is that people
conflate kicking from hand in open play (a key part of a 10's
skillset) with place-kicking for goal/points. If I were in the
coaching staff, I'd be pushing for some of the other backs
(Northmore, Murley, Green, Lynagh, David) to put in regular
kicking practice to see if one of them has the ability to take
over if the 10 is having a case of the yips during a game. Just
an hour or so a week building up the muscle memory & routine
wouldn't impact much on other training & could prove a useful
additional option.

When I first got interested in rugby long ago the place kicker
was almost invariably the full back.

I can remember Scotland having a forward doing the kicking,
anyone remember his name?

I think a lot of French teams have their 9 taking place kicks.

I remember that Australia had John Eales kicking from lock (and
he was much more than 'decent') but I don't remember the Scots
having someone.

Allan Martin (lock) was goal kicker for Aberavon and Wales.

Yes, but Eales's nickname was "Nobody". As in, nobody's perfect.
I wonder if someone is confusing Big Gav Hastings with a
forward. He certainly looked like one....

Peter Brown could be the Scottish kicker.
