Quins v Sale Sharks (Sunday 8th January)

I am looking forward to going to the Stoop on Sunday. But, I
fear (& I do hope that I am badly wrong) we will be battered,
both physically and on the scoreboard. I had a look at the
weather forecast for Sat & Sunday (rain !), that will not help
us in the least either !

We will need a big effort as certainly since really the Irish
game in the prem we have been lacking any real direction,
particularly in the backs. Not having a proper back row dosent
help, but I am amazed we haven’t utilised more injury cover
signings considering players out.

We need some big carriers in the pack. Hammond and Matthews as a
pairing doesn't offer much grunt, and White and Lawday as
flankers is not ideal either. I thought someone said that
Chisholm was due to play in the London Scottish v Richmond game,
but I don't think he did. (Incidentally the Scottish team did
have loads of Quins in but was well beaten)

London Scottish had listed 8 Quins players in their starting 23.
(I think that one of the players was drafted into the Saints
game - so, it was probably down to 7.)
Chisholm wasn't one of them.
Morris started on the wing and had an excellent game and scored
their only try. He was subbed at around 70 minutes.
Matas played in the back row. Not sure he made much impact.
Richmond played to their strengths and mullered the LS scrum.
All points came from rolling mauls, pick-and-gos or penalties
(as is usual for them).
Stafford was the Richmond scrum half. He had a decent game. But,
it is easy to be decent when your front 5 are so utterly
dominant.
The weather was not great and the Athletic Ground is generally
pretty heavy underfoot. So, the backs were not going to score
many. Morris being the exception. In fact, he was unlucky not to
score twice.
As you say - LS were well beaten. Not bad for an amateur
Richmond team to beat a professional outfit loaded with
premiership players :-)

Thanks. Heading to see Chinnor vs Rosslyn park tonight. Nick
Easter now in charge of Chinnor and quite a few ex-quins in the
RP squad (Walker, Piper, Lewis, Aspland-Robinson), plus Marcus'

Harlequins’ coaching group has named the matchday squad to host
Sale Sharks in Round 15 of the Gallagher Premiership this Sunday
– 15:00 kick-off live on BT Sport 1. There are four changes to
the starting line-up that fell to defeat against Northampton
Saints on New Year’s Day.
A physical South African duo of Wilco Louw and Irne Herbst step
into starting XV to bring extra weight to the tight five.
Another change to the forwards sees Luke Wallace earn a start at
openside flanker, with Tom Lawday taking up a role amongst the
Impact Players in the 20 jersey.
The final change sees scrum-half Danny Care return to the
starting line-up to partner Tommy Allan. Harlequins will look to
claim home and away victories against Sale for the first time in
a season since the 2013/14 campaign.
Lineout and Defence Coach Jerry Flannery said: “We’ve taken a
close look at the game footage and had some important and
uncomfortable conversations following the Saints defeat. After a
result like that one, it’s key that you can come together and
have those tough conversations to set yourselves right for the
next challenge; and Sale Sharks are a real physical challenge
for any team."
“Any of our games against Sale over the last few years have
always been very dense, physical games, so we’ve got to get that
bit right. You can have all the plans in the world but if you’re
not physical then you’re not going to be able to do what you
need to get the win against a team like this. “This will be a
very different challenge to the Saints game and it’s a contest
we’re looking forward to.”
