Marler is and always has been a complex character and for what
it’s worth, it’s beyond debate that he is an all-time Harlequin.
With him, you get two characters that cross over in varying
proportions. One is the world class loosehead prop who can take
on anyone and move mountains. The other is a sort of cartoon
character windup merchant with a massive personality who does
cross, and has crossed, the line of what is acceptable in the
game or elsewhere.
On a good day, they blend into one and we get this incredible,
maverick leader on the field who makes both the game and
everyone around him better, see the premiership final in 2021,
or asking the ref whether he’s wearing white boots for a bet.
On a bad day, we get the cartoon character who can, and has,
killed games for us. This is the guy that showed up, in part,
yesterday, and on days such as the one where he groped AWJ for
England.
We usually get somewhere between the two. By and large, the
juice is worth the squeeze and the world class prop comes out
often enough to make some of the riskier stuff he’s prone to
worth it, on balance. Yesterday was not one of those days.
Castres at home last year was another of those days where I
remember this was the case too, and I’ve thought it before also
now and then. You can tell where his head is, and when he’s on
he’s on and when he’s off he’s off.
I still think the noise that comes with him is “worth it” but
there’ll come a time soon enough where it isn’t anymore. For the
first time a while, the argument that that’s already the case is
looking convincing. We have a succession plan in Baxter who
looks like his heir apparent, which will see this argument seem
a bit more tempting. Personally, I think we’d be daft not to
keep him around until he decides he’s had enough, as long as he
performs and wears any punishment that comes for the funny
business, as he has.
There was good twitter debate about this earlier between some of
the usual exponents (including Mike brown) but see that some of
the tweets have been deleted. I don’t think Marler is as beyond
reproach as some of those arguing for him think he is, but his
legacy here is undeniable regardless, complex a character though
he may be.

Seems a bit of a grey area. I wonder how often a player has been
red carded for verbals against another player, as opposed to
against an official?

Article in Daily Telegraph this evening states Marlers comment
was concerning Heenans mother who happens to be in hospital.
Marley has admitted his comment was p.ss poor.

Truly shocking thing for a professional player, who apparently
champions mental health to say. It’s good he’s admitted he’s had
a brain fart saying it but it really is massively below the
belt.
It’s a shame if Joe is approaching the end of his career
(hopefully he isn’t) but for all the good he’s done, it’s a
shame this will be a lot of peoples last memory of him playing…

For obvious reasons, this incident immediately sprang to mind
although I think it was a citing rather than an on-field red

words used and Denny maintained he was misheard).

They mention a Bastareaud incident too, although this point is
interesting: "Verbal abuse of an opponent about their religion,
colour, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin carries a
ban of between six and 18 weeks"
It will be interesting to see if there is a citing. One concern
would be that it could open a floodgate. On the other hand, if
it doesn't, are fams supposd to believe that there's never any
verbal during a match?

Murmurings he will be cited today, with probably at least a 6
week ban, however with his record could be 12-18 weeks. 6
nations recall would be up in smoke...Good work Joe, Good work..
