I wonder would this attract the same level of reticence from the
sporting world re. local human rights and differences in various
cultural values or has the world moved on and moved past all of
that?

It would be the end of the Lions as an interest for me. Can't
keep going on about "rugby values" and tradition to justify
existence in the modern game and then go play a game in Qatar
for wheelbarrows full of cash.

I went to Qatar for work about 15 years ago as a female
travelling on my own. I used to travel all round ME. Apart from
fact I was not permitted to stay over in any UAE except AUH and
DXB I never had any problem except in Qatar which was extremely
unpleasant and I would never return. The local inhabitants treat
you like a different species. I also do not enjoy the fact that
I could only go into top hotel restaurant/bars with Europeans
and that some Sri Lankan’s I was
meeting were not permitted entrance. I would be very upset if
they courted Qatar. I was one of the few who went down to AUH
many years ago when we played Wasps and part from LOl everyone
was very friendly and I knew some of the hotel GMs so got a free
bed and used my Avios for BA. Ieuan Evans was down there and
greeted us like long lost friends. But don’t kid yourself that
you meet the ‘locals’ you don’t the only country for that is
Oman. Even at the horse racing In Dubai the locals don’t mix.

I’d switch off the Lions for good if they chased that cash cow
by selling out.
Sure what we saw on the screens in Qatar it was a nice show, but
scratch below the surface and you will see attitudes and
practices which have long been outlawed or removed from western
society. Ultimately each country can do what they wish under
whatever laws they make, but that dosent mean we need to accept
it as an acceptable culture. You don’t promote things like the
LGBT games, with the rainbow laces etc, and then take a pay
cheque off a nation which locks people up for the values you
support.
The dispensable migrant workers, laws on association, LGBT
etc..no thanks. All the money in the world dosent replace common
values.
If it did happen, I’d hope Guiness stay a mile away from it as
Budweiser found out the hard way.
If it’s for promoting the beauty of the game and inspiring the
population, heck do it in Kenya! That would be a great trip.
Maybe Pyongyang could be a decent venue as well. Would be a good
parade to kick it off at least
