I agree with you - but only up to a point.
(I also work in the software industry and have lost money due to
others pirating my software.)
Basically, I think that the PRTV offering is pretty good. It is
fairly priced for what it is. (or at least it was if you
purchased while there was a deal on).
However, BT Sport is expensive (currently £25/month) for what it
is. The reason seems to be that they are using the money to
subsidise other sports (i.e. football). I have no interest at
all in watching any football matches. In fact, I have no
interest in any other sports that BT show. Therefore, BT does
not give me value for money and I choose not to subscribe.
(I would assume that if BT did a BT Sport Rugby channel that you
could subscribe to on it own, then it would probably cost less
than a fiver a month.)
But, the biggest issue I have with the whole setup is that it is
a monopoly.
To watch all games in this country, you have to have a BT
contract. In the perfect world, Peacock would show games on the
Sky TV platform too.
Then you could choose to subscribe to Peacock and/or BT Sport to
watch rugby.

There is no way I would pay for BT's TV just to get the rugby. I
watch little enough live rugby as it is, and having it on tap
probably wouldn't change that. So the existence of illegal feeds
and legal feeds in other countries (I'll explain the difference
in a moment, I realise they're all illegal feeds) does not
affect that. I am not a would be BT subscriber who has been
seduced elsewhere.
There are always illegal sports feeds on the internet, cricinfo,
rugbystreams etc... I can watch those (at the risk of viruses,
malware etc...) and rugby doesn't get a penny from them.
Or I could watch a service like Peacock which is safer and which
at least returns some money to rugby. (Actually I can't, they
detect my VPN and I can't be bothered to change it).

Since COVID started, I have to say that I love BT - watched
almost every (rugby) game on it and the cricket when it has been
on there.
This season, since I & Club cocked up my ST renewal, I've
continued to use it keenly, for the Premiership and European
games: I reckon each rugby game I watch is costing me £1 -
that's got to be a bargain.

I signed up to Amazon Prime on an offer, and found it was
showing live sport (inc rugby). I've watched a couple of
international games on there. Fantastic value.

As with all the offers, cheap if you use it. I piggyback my
wife's account (for music and deliveries) which makes it good
value as the rugby - and some TV & films - are included so we
continue. We also have BT, but that only after severe haggling -
and do not pay £24.00 pcm - which is believed value.
I don't believe the Amazon is value, my wife does, so for peace
I accept I must watch rugby on the site sometimes (and smile
inwardly saying thank you).
There will always be side deals, with risks of virus's and
malware etc, an it is for each to decide their personal
acceptance of risk.

Since you mention PRTV being fairly priced as long as you got in
on the early bird deal, in the interests of balance BT Sport
didn’t have to be £25.
Personally, I get it free with a £5/month upgrade to watch it on
TV (rather than a phone/tablet).
It’s part of my EE contract so once that expires, I’ll have to
pay but I believe it’s £10/month (plus the £5 upgrade).
