Josh Bassett

Rugby Paper reporting that Leicester are keen on him for next
season.
Can see that being an attractive proposition for him as his
family are settled in the midlands and he commutes daily from
Leamington Spa to Guildford. Also with Lynagh and Green
returning to fitness and hopefully emergence of Cleaves the back
3 positions should be well stocked.
Can’t see Aaron Morris being renewed as seemingly permanently
injured

Even with Louis & Tyrone coming back (whenever that is), I do
hope that Quins can do a deal with him. He has been an
outstanding signing; I hope we can make it a permanent move
somehow.

Always liked him as a player for Wasps. The last two seasons
back line injuries have shown we need strength in depth. If
salary cap allows we should keep him.

We need to keep him.
Just because Louis and Green are coming back into the fold,
there's no reason why it can't happen again next season (getting
injured). If Murley gets an England chance or gets Injured, and
then David or Louis get injured again, our options are
essentially Beard (who we seem to be turning into 13) and a
talented but very inexperienced individual in Cassius.
Offloading Morris and R Chisholm we might have some salary to
play with and I think he is started to show he can be a
dependable player, so we should keep him.

I've been repeatedly underwhelmed by Nick David as well, so
another decent back three player would be good to have!

I think that R Chisholm's salary as a player will be negligible.
He is basically getting a salary as a coach. I can't see any
reason not to keep him on as an "occasional player". He is a
useful player to have around in the Prem Cup games.
Morris has been a pretty good player for us. No reason he can't
be again now that he has recovered from concussion. Hopefully
his ankle injury is not long term. He was injured in June 2022.

That surprises me... I think he has looked pretty sharp

David has been good with ball in hand and I can't remember any
obvious flaws defensively, but he's dropped a few high balls,
especially when under pressure.
Given we're also losing Marchant, it would be nice to keep
Bassett if we can but a) it sounds like the move may be for
personal reasons and b) we don't know Quins long term succession
plans or what room they have under the cap.
The next couple of years are going to be odd as the cap
reduction unwinds. Players who were signed to existing contracts
before the cap reduction muddy the water quite a bit. Quins
announced quite a lot of "long term deals" with no specified
term ahead of the cap reduction - which makes me think that
they've signed at least some players on longer than usual deals
that are designed to ride out the cap going down and then back
up. They've also been pretty smart over the last few years at
bringing through Academy players.
Against that, we're losing some probable high paid players in
Wilco, Marchant and Allan, and at least two of their successors
are likely to be internal promotions (Beard for Marchant, Benson
for Allan) - but what we don't know is whether those actually
create space within the cap or not.

If we can keep Bassett then great, but we're pretty well stocked
in the backs and for me recruitment priorities would be another
genuine number 8 for when Dommers is on England duty and a
decent replacement for Wilco. The scrum has been the bedrock of
our relative success the last few seasons.
If management are making space in the cap, then I hope it's for
a long-term successor for DC. Gjaltema and Steele aren't first
choice material.
