Always a bit rude to announce a player arriving before their
current club has announced their departure. But I think Quins
will be fine given how Edwards and Benson are developing.

Question is, are we happy with Edwards starting 50% of the games
across a season? He's a good back up but if smith is going to
miss half the season you need someone like Allan

I imagine the coaches’ view is that Benson is developing fast
enough to carry some of the load. He’s now two years older than
Smith was when he became the primary fly half…

Fair enough. Edwards' kicking today shows why he can't really be
a regular starter

I don't know what he's studying but I assume Benson has at least
one more year in uni after this season. We will have to sign
another 10.

Assuming you can replace existing players with academy graduates
is risky. If you get one player every couple of years who's a
guaranteed 1st team starter you are doing very well. CoS bet on
this strategy and it saw us slide steadily down the table.

The son of a work colleague was part of the Quins Academy for a
while, before going to uni in the US on a soccer scholarship.
His view was that there were three generations of Academy
graduates:
- The group that made up the core of the 2011-12 team, who had
entered the academies before the setup was properly organised
but had emerged as decent players more by luck than judgement
- The group who followed them, who still didn’t benefit from a
proper academy setup but mostly lacked the talent to replace the
first generation
- The players who came through the academy once it was properly
set up. My colleague’s son was part of this group, and he said
the generation ahead of them were so much less well trained that
they felt sorry for them.
The post 2012 slide coincided with that middle group coming
through (coupled with the loss of the 2012 generation).
The academy output since that point has been much more
consistent, though it’s been coupled with some unusually astute
recruitment from South Africa, the lower leagues and Cardiff
Met.

Confirmed by Quins.
He’s been possibly the best back up 10 Quins have had. However
now he’s back in the Italy squad he’s not the ideal back up now
he’s away in both the autumn and six nations. By my reckoning
Benson has one more year at Cambridge Uni.
DC confirmed on the bbc pod about a month ago they club tried to
sign Charlie Atkinson but he chose Leicester as doesn’t want to
be a back up 10 for the next 10 + years as he has his own
international aspirations

He's studying Natural Sciences which would normally be 3 years.
