I think a lot of the populus would love to have a chance at
working on the railways as it is good pay. All of the
occupations you've mentioned and certainly are to do, but in
line with a lot of us still earn very well.
In terms of going after job security, turning down the no
compulsory redundancies until 2025...no job is secure these
days. Any one of us could go into the office etc and be told
sorry its not working, we are closing etc.
In defense of the RMT etc, its poor to hear the government have
put the brakes on the RDG making an offer and instead putting
their time and effort into legislation to go after those wishing
       to strike.

Only the South East. The rest of the country are quite used to
living without a reliable train service.

Jim Pickard and the FT more broadly has a real dislike for this
       government (I can't think why!).
I have to say I think its perfectly possible to hold both the
train companies (and by extension the govt.) and the RMT in
       contempt at the same time.

Actually the FT is fairly leftist these days. It's been captured
by the fabians like so much else in this country.

You cannot afford a bike on minimum wage.

Lazy generalisation. If we looked at media political leaning in
particular the largest circulating broadsheets and tabloids are
       all right oriented.
FT strikes me as largely centrist, but is also owned by a
       centre-right parent co.

       Which hopefully isn’t English teaching.

Would it be too much to hope that this might cause Quins to move
the stupid bloody big game to a different weekend in future
       years?
Even if everything works perfectly, surely I can't be the only
one annoyed at having to decide every year whether to go to the
game or stay at a family Christmas elsewhere in the country?
I don't like having to go to Twickenham at the best of times,
but at least if it wasn't that fixture, we'd alternate home and
       away Christmas fixtures.

       Highly doubt it.
Financially, its a huge win. Lots of people off work due to the
bank holiday, not really competing with football due to most of
the games being boxing day. Most games it would be near a sell
out for this fixture, but I doubt if it was a weekend in March
it would have the same draw, as evidenced with the Gloucester
summer game pulling in 47k, which is low considering the
       capacity.
It can be an annoying fixture, due to many hampered with rail
issues or family dilemmas, but there will be plenty more
available people closer to the stadium who will easily come for
a laugh who might not be a regular at the stoop, just because
it's something to do over the holidays.
