On a side note, O'Shea is coming out of all this very badly - no
doubt he's taken a lot of damage as a result of this.
Every decent rugby writer is naming him as part of the problem
in their pieces on the decline of Jones.

I wouldn't bet against Borthwick being confirmed before the 6N.
Good chance that job #1 is negotiating his Tigers exit.

As bad as EJ was to the end of his tenure, the other backroom
staff are equally culpable.
A merry go round of coaches (including some bizarre appointments
of clearly underwhelming candidates) and lackluster corporate
yes men like COS all share the blame.
Sweeney equally should go but I doubt that will happen.
It all reminds me of where I work, in that things become very
institutionalized as senior management surround themselves, and
managers below them, with people of a similar approach to
things. When things continue to get worse, there's some
sacrificial lamb and some word salad but more of the same. What
you really need is entire departments to be shaken up and people
from outside the organization brought in, who don't have any
allegiances or agendas, to actually crack the whip.

I’m surprised they’ve done it. Although this wasn’t like the
2018 downturn as he had a proper carousel of staff this time
around and there’s been a lot of players on the fringes taking
the money in France over fighting for their shirts.
I just hope the appointment process for his successor is
thorough and not knee jerk. You’d want Borthwick and any other
interested parties to be able to articulate their vision for
2027 as much as the next 10 games and the RWC.
I don’t know who the rugby equivalent of Brendan McCullum is (a
brave appointment based on a completely different and radical
approach) or what that style of play looks like, but I don’t
have any confidence in the RFU in finding them. The parallel
would be in appointing someone who can identify what England do
well and how they might leverage that. The core Leicester group
with an experienced consultant running the attack might be what
we will get but not sure it’s what we need.

Given that Baz was expected to go for the white ball job,
wouldn’t it be somebody like Ben Ryan?
For clarity, I’m not advocating that Ryan should be the next
England XVs coach - not least as he’s seemingly not on great
terms with the RFU.

But if the new coach is Borthwick, will he be instilling a new
defensive system on England? Can he not simply continue with
whatever England have now and just fix the more obvious
stupidities in the England setup? Play players in form in the
positions they play for their clubs? That shouldn't take them a
year to acclimatise, surely? Decide who the #10 is going to be
and use the 6N to decide if he's right or not. We are a scant 9
games away from the RWC, but I still think the right man could
fix this. Harlequins turned round a losing streak mid season by
sacking the coach and then simply trusting the players to
perform with guidance from the coaches - but they didn't force a
rigid gameplan on the players. The problem is are the players
capable of thinking for themselves after 7 years of Eddie's game
plans?
