Well hopefully less sitting around with tonnes of board members
for no apparent reason or productivity and more working on our
NZ deal - presumably on a contract basis.

professional rugby club would need rugby expertise all the
time?!

I'd prefer a board that is focussed on making the club
profitable and successfully managing the build of the new Stoop.
Yes, they need the input from and to the Rugby side of things,
but whether that needs a permanent seat on the board is
debatable. They can have Rugby representation there as needed.

The purpose of a Board of Directors is not to run the business.
The latter is the responsibility of the Chief Executive (David
Ellis). The Quins Board comprises 3 non-executive Directors
(Jillings, Morgan and Pope), plus David Ellis as the only
executive Director. The key responsibilities of the Board are
compliance - meaning ensuring that the business operates within
all aspects of the law, and to make final decisions relating to
the direction of the business (thus major capital expenditure).
Hence David Ellis is responsible to the Board for all the
day-to-day stuff (including ultimately the rugby aspects) and
for making the business work (and is accountable to the Board
for doing that). The Board would be the people deciding on major
decisions relating to a new stadium.

I am a very simple person so please help me understand the
rationale of building a stadium more than twice the current
capacity that we only sell out occasionally.Furthermore we run
at a loss and all the capital requirements will have to be
borrowed substantially increasing overall debt.
English rugby overall is not financially viable as currently
structured.
Just don’t see the rationale.

My (limited) understanding is that it’s part of a much bigger
project to make the business more sustainable. For that there
needs to be much more scope for the site to make money on non
match days, and have greater earning potential when the games
are on.
There’s a lot that can be done and it needs to be ambitious. I’m
cautiously optimistic.
On the capacity - our attendances are so high %age wise I really
think there is scope to step up. With a brand new ground there
will probably be a flurry of new season tickets taken up so
there will hopefully be an initial spike. May be more of a
challenge to maintain that long term though.

Absolutely agree with this. If you look at the clubs that are or
are moving towards being profitable, the factor that makes the
difference is the non-matchday revenue streams. At the moment we
have the bars and the lounges that can potentially be used.
That's something, but there's a limit to how flexible they are &
what use they can be put to. A newer facility that is more
adaptable than the Stoop is as now will allow the club* to bid
for/offer the use of the stadium for more types of event and
conference.
If there's a way to make the pitch useable by others too
(without going full artificial) that might mean we can loan out
the sporting facilities to local clubs/sports. Heck, we're
already doing something similar with the Hockey pitch next
summer. If we can become the home of England Hockey, that offers
more revenue too. Why not? It's perfectly plausible...
Plus, the larger capacity opens up the possibility of more music
events. At the moment there's a bit of a gap in the venues
available that can accommodate a medium-sized tour, even in
London. You have venues like Wembley/Twickenham/Olympic Stadium
that can host your really big shows like the Rolling Stones, U2,
etc. After that, you've only got the O2 that can host a 20k
audience before you drop down to venues that host 10k. If we can
offer a venue in that 20k to 30k mid-range, like we did last
summer with Elton John & Little Mix, then that's yet another way
of getting money in.
All in all, I think the larger stadium is a good plan, and could
even mean that seat prices are reduced slightly to draw in more
folks (we can dream!).
*I say club, but really we should be talking of Harlequins the
Company, of which the Club is a part.
