Wouldn’t say “top rated”. At best, most were 3rd choice or
lower. Rodd was the obvious exception but I understand the
intention of keeping him match sharp in case England need to
call him up.

A makeshift 10 and being battered in the scrum made it a long
night. Birch and Wilkinson probably the pick for Sale.
Thought Lawday and Jurevicius were our best performers, which
you'd expect.
Couple of good moments from Trenholm, but not much else to shout
about.

You’re the Sale man, but I think it’s fair to say James Harper
is definitely a top rated prospect. Nye Thomas as well I
thought?
Even if the majority of that squad is 3rd or 4th choice, there’s
a good bit of Premiership experience there. Woodward, McGuigan,
Mills, Harrison and Barrow all have a chunk of top level games
under their belt. Those 4th choice players like Birch,
Postlethwaite and Dugdale aren’t academy greenhorns either.
We only really had Lawday, Matthews and Garcia Botta with any
meaningful Premiership level experience. Most of the rest of
that squad was very much academy for us.
TBH, we knew we were unlikely to qualify so I’m OK with us using
it as a comeback hit out for Lawday and getting some more
experience for the academy kids.

Don’t disagree with much of that except for a couple of points.
Harper is a valued prospect but he’s 3rd choice. Think of him
like Riley.
And Woodward didn’t play. Although to be fair Reed did and has
Prem/Heineken experience.
Arguably our stand out players were Birch (who rarely plays for
the 1st XV and was released in 2020 before being brought back
in) and Wilkinson (who was the 22 so would appear to be our 4th
choice 10).
Overall, I’d say we put out a “classic” Prem Cup side - lots of
academy boys, a few old stagers (McGuigan and Barrow) and some
coming back from injury/just joined the club.
As mentioned, Rodd was the anomaly but is akin to Lawday in that
neither would look out of place in the 1st XV when everyone is
fit.
If I’m nitpicking, I’d possibly add Gjaltema as somebody who has
had decent Prem experience (at least this season) and he’s
certainly further ahead in the relative pecking orders than
Thomas.
But don’t get me wrong, I also appreciate that you guys had the
BaaBaas on Thursday. Without that game, your team would’ve been
a touch stronger and the game much closer.

Without checking I would have thought Rocky Dennis, er, I mean
Harrison, is closing in on 200 games for Sale? Two very tough
opponents for Hobson but he certainly didn't disgrace himself.

Two wiley old loose heads that know all the tricks had our
youngsters in a bit of trouble. It still looked a bit of a
lottery at scrum time but who would think the experienced
hardened front row could be wrong. It’s all a learning
opportunity for our youngsters. Our subs looked younger and
lighter the further the game went on so it was no surprise that
the far more heavyweight Sale would pull away.

Wouldn't call 22 y/o Rodd a 'wily old loose head'! 'A hugely
talented and skilled young prop' perhaps
