He deserves to play for the remainder series, to see if he can
step it up when really needed against the big boys. He does need
to make more carries though, as he makes some good yards in the
premiership but haven't seen that impact yet.

With fewer clubs actually in the league I think those looking to
move (or to find a club again) might well be forced to accept a
lower wage or to move overseas.

2022 Launchbury is still an upgrade on what we have at lock. He
probably has a couple of years left and might see an outside
shot at a lions tour in 2025 as incentive to keep playing hard.
Signing him makes a lot of sense for us. Lock is already an area
where we have fewer sure things. Secondly, if we are to learn
how to adapt our style where needed, launch offers that
flexibility so things like the leicester game stop happening. If
we are to lose Louw and Marchant in positions of depth, plugging
an international class player on the outside looking in into
that area of relative weakness with the money left over makes a
lot of sense to me. We could start him with a Herbst and play a
lighter back row without losing a lot, or have one of him or
Herbst alongside a Lamb or Hammond when the grounds dry up.
Agree he shouldn’t be captain. That’s Dombrandt’s job if Lewies
leaves.

I'm just not sure that's going to be true for a 'name' like
Launchbury. Despite the injury problems I've already mentioned,
I'm sure he could still command a decent wedge in France/Japan
on reputation alone. Sure, there's an internal Premiership
marketplace - and, granted, I have no insight into whether or
not Launchbury would even want to up sticks and leave the
country, as every player's motivations are different at
different times in their careers - but we are still competing
with (much more stable) market forces outside of the rapidly
deflating Premiership bubble and agents will still leverage
those to get the best deal for their player. Launchbury is
coming towards the twilight of his career, so needs to cash in.
I think it's very naive to assume we've nabbed him on a reduced
rate. I would bet that we've had to offer him a substantial
amount not to go abroad for his last hurrah, even if secretly he
had no intention of going abroad at all.

Did we once have Joe in our academy? Would this count as academy
credits like Matthews? Might make it slightly more affordable
against other Prem clubs?

We really need a sticky about this. He was not in our academy,
he was in our player development group at youth level but was
not picked up as Matthews demonstrated better potential at the
time.

If so you need to edit his Wikipedia article!
"He played for Horsham and also represented Barns Green before
joining the Harlequins Academy age 15." - this is sourced from
an RFU article.

EDIT - started a post about the differences between the DPP, the
EPDG, the 'Junior Academy' and the Academy, but decided it just
wasn't worth it.
