him about some of the basics. His ball security was dreadful -
he'd lose it in contact constantly (remember Danny just nicking
it off him to score?). His discipline was frequently appalling.
But I'm not seen anything this season to suggest the former is
still a problem, and the latter has improved a lot albeit it's
still a work in progress.

great international 7, and we could be just as annoyed about the
turnover demon we have not getting a look-in, etc. Perhaps if
England were trying to play a faster game then Earl would be
higher up the pecking order; as it is, Eddie wants a hammer not
a scalpel, so even though he's a good carrier & tackler, Earl
isn't going to batter the big guys in the same way as Willis or
Curry can.

If all fit Curry Willis and Dombrandt would be a great back row.
IF Willis gets a start at 7 and does well, I wouldn't be
surprised if for the WC that will be the back row, however with
Billy at 8 as I think it will have to take a massive drop off in
form, combined with Alex being in his best ever form, to change
EJ's approach.

I get your point MQ and know how Eddie loves his muses but
Dombrandt offers so much more than any other 8. Billy gives you
physicality, Simmons gives you a good running game and tackling.
Dommers gives you all of those and the hands of a 12, superb
running lines and try's in abundance.
Any other side in the world, he starts.

Willis' main obstacle for becoming an England starter at the
world cup is Lawes, as I imagine EJ will put him at 6 with Curry
shifting to 7. I think Billy is still capable but as you say
Alex has a better all round game. It will be quite an important
series for Simmonds as (shockingly) I felt he didn't really
stamp his authority in the England games he did start earlier in
the year, so if he wants to stay in the mix he will need some
impact off the bench. He's a great prem player, but I think is
fairly well marshalled at international level

There was a graphic from Charlie Morgan (?) showing the starting
point for carries made by Billy, Dommers and Simmonds over a
number of Prem matches. Billy made more carries in his own half
than the other two combined. Mind you I think they had managed 2
between them. I could well be misremembering some of the
details.
England’s game plan has been to utilise Billy and Manu to get
over the gainline whereas my perception is that Dommers and Sam
are better at cutting lines or in the wider channels - the
rapiers to Billy’s bludgeon.
If we remove that carrying ability, who takes on that role?
For me, it would work best to have Billy bludgeon the oppo for
50 minutes then have Dommers’ or Sam’s silkier skills deployed
against more fatigued defenders.

Dommers at 6 with Billy and Tom C, Willis on the bench seems
like it really could work imo.
You get two really fantastic carriers, the LO option at 6 (Eddie
loves it), as well as the workhorse and jacking of Curry, with
Willis (or Earl tbh) on the bench to add something a bit
different, but also capable of doing the basics really well.
But alas, we will probably see a lock at 6

Dombrandt does a lot of heavy carrying. Billy carries in his own
half a lot because he's receiving and returning kicks, whereas
Dombrandt is more likely to be found hunting turnovers.

And if you have a back row of Dommers, Willis and Curry, who
does the Billy work?
They’ll either not be as effective as Billy or not playing 100%
to their own strengths.
That’s not for 1 second to say that Billy has to be picked but
it’s not as easy as saying X should playing instead and
expecting the same game plan to work.

Anyone but Earl. To see that grinning, gurning face, and the
fist pumping and jeering in the oppo's faces...

What exactly is the Billy work?
Dombrandt isn't Simmonds. He does the hard yards. So does Willis
for that matter, he's a tank of a carrier.

True, and before Billy that was the Nick Easter work, and we
approved of it.
