Jumpers

Haven't watched a full replay of yesterday but does Ernie do any
lineout jumping? Yesterday seemed mostly Lamb, kenningham, bit
of White. Doesn't that make lineouts a bit predictable?
Although not sure I'd want to be lifting him. (But love having
him on the pitch!)

I did wonder if with his physique, which seems to be a prop's
upper body grafted onto a lock's legs, Irne would be a better
lifter than jumper. That said, Kenningham has proven himself to
be a very adept lineout jumper (and I wouldn't be surprised if
he's doing it so much because Eddie has asked him to...)
In rugby, predictable is OK if it's hard to stop. Matfield and
Botha were predictable in the lineout but hard to stop; Billy
Vunipola is predictable ball in hand but hard to stop.
Lamb and Kenningham both seem to be very athletic and have
excellent timing, and they seem to get thrown higher than taller
men. I'd need to check the videos to see if it's happening, but
one lineout coach I recently worked with said that Quins are now
sometimes lifting on the knees and calves rather than knees and
backside - if so, you can see how they'd be hard to stop, even
with shorter jumpers.

He defo was a line out jumper for Benetton. I'm sure Joe and
Wilco could lift him no problem, but perhaps he's not as
athletic in the compared to maybe how Dino and Jack are seen.
Can't think of any reason why we would actively ignore him as a
jumper outside of that

Kenningham's taking a lot of ball but has struggled a bit, teams
are able to get at him (he had a particularly tough time against
Exeter). He's jumping more because he's playing 6 and White +
Evans aren't really targets.
Herbst not really being a target is fairly standard. Look at
Saints - their ball went to Ludlam and Coles. McFarland took
almost all of Saracens' ball. Bayliss took most of Bath's. Vui
(playing 6) took most of Bristol's, and Joyce didn't take any.
As long as you can provide someone who *might* be a target so
the opposition has to pay attention, then it doesn't matter too
much and you generally go to the more athletic option who isn't
being marked by the biggest bloke on the other side.
I do wonder if the exact makeup of our backrow makes it less
likely for us to use Herbst at the moment. Neither White nor
Evans would be particularly good lifters so there's a lot of
emphasis on the rest of the pack to do it. Just guesswork
though. They might be doing a ton of it, it's not something I'd
notice.

For it's worth, Wiki has Irne at 117kg (about 18.5 stone). Not
that massive for top flight locks.
For comparison, Lood de Jager (who was Sale's main lineout
option last season) is apparently 125kg (19.5st). Launchbury is
listed as 126kg, Kruis as 123kg and Tizard as 120kg.

As others have said I think it’s due to personnel in the back
row. We are playing three lighter guys there. Kenningham and
Lamb are option 1 and 2. Suspect they want Irne to add his
weight to drives rather than be the jumper, and also that he
enables a better lift on the lighter guys. He’s also probably
going to have a role in disrupting on others ball so won’t be
asked to compete either.
Is likely an option for us, but probably not with the current
configurations. Not sure how much Symons did in the air for us
but it wasn’t a lot either.

slower if we'll see Lewies (at all) back at 6 and then one of
Kenningham or Evans at 7. Kenners at 7 then means you've got
three genuine jumpers, plus Irne. Scrum will presumably benefit
a bit as well.
If those stats are true I'd completely underestimated how big
Tizard and Launchberry are!

Tiz is pretty massive, chatted to him last season - he must be
about 6'5"

Quins' site had Tiz as 120kg and 1.96m (6'5")
